3.0 terrano squealy belt when wet

Found out this evening when driving in the rain that I have a very squealy belt. Noise drops when engine revs drop. Didn't do it before it started raining, except a tiny bit when engine cold.

Can anyone tell me which belt this may be and is this likely to be replacement or just tightening?

do not know much about the 3.0 but a belt is a belt, if it squealed when dry and cold and not pulling the steering wheel then it will be the alternator belt is slack, only a visual inspection will tell you if it needs replacing or not, any cracks in the part that sits in the pulley and it needs replacing, if it only squealed when you pulled the steering wheel then it will be the power steering belt, same applies, Rick

Update: it's squealing all the time now

I'm not familiar with this engine as yet, so all suggestions and help gratefully received.

:thumb2 Bang on stevo, same engine as in my Troll so will have an automatic tensioner.

Sounds like the belt has stretched beyond the capabilities of the tensioner and needs replaced. Not had to replace the belt myself yet but I've got a workshop manual for the Troll and can scan the releveant pages in for you if you want cupcake? (Same engine so should give you a rough guide at least)

Further update: previous owner just said he replaced the belt and pulley when he got it so shouldn't really need doing again just yet. Advised I should spray the belt with WD40 and see if it goes away, otherwise it could be the pulley bearing.

Personally, I wouldn't use WD40, get some soapy water in a spray bottle, and spray it on the belt only. If the squeaking stops while you are doing it, sounds like belt, it it carries on, then more likely the tensioner.

If it does stop when you spray it, stop the engine, and have a look at the belt, I had one which was brand new on another car, and it actually had a thin bit in the belt, that allowed it to drop into the pulley wheel and slip a bit each turn, but as time went on, this bit was wearing more and more until it was almost a continual scream. Spraying it with soapy water was the final straw and it just stopped at the warn bit, which made it obvious.

Great, thanks. I'll give that a try later and see what occurs. Will have a look at condition of the belt at lunchtime anyway.

How long did the previous owner have it for? (ie. how long since he did the change?)

Let us know how you get on with the soapy water. When I get home I'll have a look at the troubleshooting part of the workshop manual and see what else it suggests

needs new tentioner as sounds like the bearing seal has gone.
did you get the paper work with the T2 for that part milady?

Popped to local friendly garage down the road at lunchtime and they had a quick look at it. The belt is tight, all aligned nice and straight, looks like a fairly new belt too.

He said pretty much what's been suggested here - said they could try the belt spray stuff they use to shut it up, but the squeal would more than likely come back (if it is the belt), so wiser to find the real cause.

Said it could be that it's a cheap belt and has a defect, or it could be the pulley - as suggested by you lovely knowledgeable folks :bow

Will only know the true cause by taking the belt off and having a proper look.

I haven't got time this weekend to start messing with it myself, plus I haven't found my way around this engine yet, so have booked it in with them for Tuesday morning.

Will try the soap thing tonight anyway cos I'm curious now
