hi,im a new member ive got a 3.0td patrol 2001 model,i towed my caravan last week with it and was really struggling on the smallest of hills,i was wondering if anyone knows if i can get it chipped or tunned to solve this or is it something i will just need to live with, cheers

I would'nt have thought you would have had probs like that with a 3L troll 8O I would 1st check that all of the turbo pipes are nice & tight incase you are loosing boost preasure, but I think it maybe your MAF unit is faulty.
I sure someone will be along soon who knows this engine better than me

I think you need to be a bit careful with a 3.0 engine from that era. This was, I think, before Nissan made the mods to reduce it's proclivity for melting pistons. Trying to squeeze more out of it might just be pushing your luck.

FWIW, I have a 2005 Patrol 3.0Di SVE and find it great for towing. It'll tow my 1500kg Burstner caravan over Shap on the M6, in either direction, at the legal limit in top gear without breaking sweat. I used to tow the same caravan with a 3.0D Isuzu Trooper and the Patrol is at least as good - probably better. I often overtake on the motorway towing the van in 5th, without bothering changing down as I usually would have when I had the Trooper - on the flat and even on slight uphill inclines.

It sounds like you might have some problem that needs fixing. Are you *sure* that it's in top fettle now? What is your caravan - and what did you tow it with previously?

Cheers
Andrew

hi andrew,my caravan is 1500kg,and i previously had a 2.8td frontera which pulled like a train, ive just recently got my patrol and its disapointing to say the least, slight inclines without the caravan is 3rd gear when the frontera would cruise up in 4th sometimes 5th,it just doesnt seem to have any pull.

The engine in your Patrol should have almost exactly the same output as the 3.0D in the Trooper. My guess is that you'd have given your right arm for one of those in your Frontera as it had about a third more power and torque than the 2.8Td.

It sounds like you are going to have to grit your teeth and have someone look at it for you? Turbo gone west?

Cheers

That sounds just like my T2 before I changed the MAF unit  I would try dissconecting the MAF & take it for a quick spin to see how it is, if it's the same I would say the MAF is shot, but if it's just a bit better with it reconected I would think it's on it's way out

Is it possible to clean/repair a MAF? It's only a hot wire that measures the air flow, isn't it? Would cleaning it with carb cleaner or isopropyl alcohol help?

Cheers

Yes in some casses on the T2 if it's just dirty but not if the unit is slowly dieing as mine was  but i'm sure it may would work on a patrol if it's got a bosch system & the maf is just dirty
