3.0 or 2.7?

hi peeps. my name is steve and im looking and have been for a while for a terrano.
im unsure wether to go for the 2.7 or the 3.0 deisel manual.
ive priced my insurance and theres only 90 quid in it.
is the tax more expencive on the 3L?
are they all gear driven and not cambelt?
and Iv read the 3L is slightly better on fuel ( which doesnt make sence to me.)
we have had to consolidate this year letting our motor home go then crashing my car. so we decided we wanted one vehicle thats good for work(window cleaning.I know its high up to get ladders on!)
and also with plenty of room for camping gear. but not only that we wanted a toy too. and what better toy than to go places other vehicles cant get too, off roading and of course it means i can get to wales in deep snow for winter mountaineering.
I dont like the idea of towing a caravan so it wont need to pull much weight.
any help or advice will be greatly aprecciated.

I have a 3.0 di with 120,000 miles on it.
its an auto and averages around 26~28 MPG, which are mostly sub 10 mile journeys, so I'm happy with that.
I think the reason for the supposed better fuel consumption may be down to the fact that the 3.0 is direct injection and has a 16 valve head.:nenau
The cam on the ZD30 engine is chain driven.
 
Had both and although I had no complaints with the 2.7, I like my 3.0l better, just returned from a trip to Belgium, I filled up when I left home (not brimmed ) and did just shy of 450 miles before I filled up again, it was just on the red, I sat at 65 to 70 mph (satnav) and the car just ate the miles.
 
If you have ladders get the LWB. Alot on here use cooking oil which you can' t use in the 3.0. Road tax is on age, You can get vans if its for business use but not for the family. Both good motors. David.
 
Agree with above, the tax is a bit higher from 2000 onwards and 2006 onwards is when the £450 tax on large engines comes in.

The omissions on the 3.0 are less than the 2.7 but not enough to put it into a lower band.

Do check the under side of anything your looking at as they do rust, just check through the postings on here.
 
thanks for the replies peeps. im still not sure which one to go for and by the replys there doesnt seem much in it anyway.
I nearly brought one from a farm but realised it was looking a bit rusty on the chasis.
the search continues. im hoping to get one by this weekend so we can get out over xmas.but realise my choice is not to be rushed as im looking for a motor to keep for (hopefully) many years

So why change it.:nenau

Best vehicle I have ever owned.
Last year I spent £6.50 on it...
That was for a new screen pump.

3 years ago, new tail section for the exhaust
4 years ago 2 new glow plugs, only £7.00 each for the td version.

The expense.


This year...
Hmm...
Oh, a new bulb for behind the digital clock, even then I already had a few spares from our other car.

Other than service items... Nothing:thumb2

I've had both a 2.7 and now have a 3ltr. My preference is by far for the 3ltr. It is more powerful and more economical. That is if you don't want to use veg oil. However beware of gearbox trouble indicated by a whine in the higher gears. There are several threads on here relating to the subject. I had to replace the gearbox on my 2.7 and the 3ltr box was rebuilt by the dealer I bought it from before I would accept it. I have also had to replace the rear axle on the 3ltr when I heard exceptional bearing noise in forward drive. I believe, however, that was an exceptional occurence as the axles are normally 'bullet proof'. Beware also of rust around the top of the front wheel arches where the plastic trim is mounted, the rear seat belt mounts, which you can see from under the rear wheel arches and the lower inner part of the front wings, just below where the lower door hinge attaches. Apart from those issues the T2 is a great truck, you'll love it and when you buy one join up and pay your tenner - you'll save that just by downloading the workshop manual!

The 2.7 engine has a gear driven cam, it has nothing to go wrong apart from the electrics which are very simple, it's fitted to a London black cab and will do over 500k if serviced

Mines done 145k and is like new, starts first flick, no smoke, no oil consumption, a few lads here have 180k+ and have the same story

3.0 has more complex electronics and has a timing chain that can be troublesome, not many reports of trouble free star ship mileage with the 3.0 if any ?

If your buying a 100k mile used truck IMHO you buy the 2.7

If I was buying new more so if it was a company car I'd have the 3.0

not even tires oil etc?? or are you talking about non service parts?

You put tyres on any car you own and oil in any car you own.

No point in counting items like that, same with exhausts, parts that wear do so on any car.
 
ive maybe got upto 3k max.
im just looking at an 03 plate going for 3500 but he may do deal but its auto.
are autos any good off road?

Autos are fine off road, some prefer them as u never lose traction when changing gear like on a hill climb, personally I'd never have an auto as I prefer manual, it's very much down to personal preference

£3500 is top whack for an 03, it would need to be immaculate from a dealer

I'd be looking on eBay and auto trader, I've seen really nice 04/05 2.7 sports go for that kind of money, just beware of when the road tax changes as its like £400 a year after 05 iirc
 
I paid £2200 for my '02 sport Lwb 10 months ago.

Tbh looking on eBay they seem to have gone up on value again :D but those dealers are dreaming IMO.
 
got all of the above on my watch list. the second one is a cat d as it has a rear end shunt. the first one looks stuning.
there is a green one near blackpool going for 2.850 whos already said yes to 2.6 maybe push to 2.5k 12 mths mot just serviced ect.
ive got to wittle my list down as im watching about 20 trucks.
but i have got to be cautious as my last car cost me 1500 for 3 mths motoring and ended up selling it for spares for 300 quid.thats expencive motoring.
this is all my money so i have to get it right.
this is a great website and ive learnt loads already.
we live and play near the peak district and look forward to lots of fun on gentle lanes with some peeps from here maybe
