Been trying to work out which is the best option?:augie
I could fit a 120 amp alt instead of my existing 70amp job and possibly melt cables:nenau
OR fit a 2nd std 70 amp alt with it's own loom to the 2nd battery:augie
Second option saves all that messin' about with high ampage split charge thingies too:D

well i'm not an electrician but my dim memory of such things in a professional capacity leads me to think that, assuming you've got your circuitry right, your standard alternator should be well up to the job of charging two batteries, especially on a diesel which isn't relying on it for sparks....?:nenau

Ah but the winch demands lots a watts and ONE 113 amp hour battery takes a while to recover from winch, spots, glow plugs etc with a 'iccle 70 amp alt:augie

rationalise :)

I'm still counting the days til that gay leisure battery cashes its chips in LMAO:lol:lol

use a second one . that way your not effecting your starting power ever . keep it seperate for the winch. that way you wont ever get stuck

Personally I would go for the second alternator option.

1 A larger alternator will require 2 belts and a lot of tension to prevent it slipping, this could put additional strain on the water pump and power steering pump. Our standard alternators have 1 belt,
2 I don't have air con so there is a spare pulley on the crank shaft, this could be used but how you could fit an extra alternator, it could be a tight squeeze.
3 you will need to have a good wrap around the pullies, I would guess a minimum of 1/3 of a circumference otherwise it will slip.
4 Some form of belt tensioning will be required for each belt if 2 belts are used.
5 If your main alternator fails it will be easy to use the second battery to get you home.

Just some issues worth thinking about.

Good luck with the installation.

Best regards, Rustic

fit the second battery and up the current alt to a 90 amp

the twin bat troopers run from one alt

have the second battery wired to the alt separately and keep the second one just for the winch unless you need them both for it

I like this idea, i would just charge second battery with a 'smart com' or simmilar and have just it for the winch and maybe a couple of auxillary lights , the second altenator sounds like a load of bother to me.

Interesting split in thoughts here guys :sly
I could do with some info on the good quality split chargers now then:rolleyes:
I thought the second alt was cheaper as it's just another std alt avail all over the scrap yard and just chew a bit of loom off to charge the second battery.
Keep it coming :D

I just stuck the t-max one in, Works a treat. And you get a nice in-car display of voltages which I forgot to show you.

I beleive the system is rated to 180a max.

Only downside it's a bit expensive.

Well I dont want one melting in a heap:doh How much was it mate?

that would be the best bet tbh

second alterantor would be a pain as where would you put it also how would you bolt it in place with no mounts for it

Vacuum Pump

Have you made provision for the vacuum pump that is currently mounted on the rear of the original alternator ? :nenau

so I take it you've currently just got 'em connected in parallel then?
