Hi Folks, I've fitted a 2" suspension lift to my t2. Getting vibration at higher speeds and it's developed a whine in 5th any ideas??

How much have you wound the front up by?

If you wind it up too much you put the top bump stop against the wish bone, so get continual road noise. Also have you got fixed front hubs? the extra angle on the CV's, being turned by the fixed hubs will show up more.

Oooooh! What kit have you used? This is going to be first modification of the beast...
 
The hubs are standard. New to this so don't know if they are fixed or not. Got the lift kit for Christmas off t'other half and a snorkel but haven't fitted that yet. Not sure where he got them from. The tortion bars are wound right up so I'll look at that.

Try dropping them down so you can just get the tip of your little finger between the bump stop and the wish bone.... it means the front is a bit lower than the back with a 2" lift, but should stop the noise and premature wear issues.

With the hubs, it would be worth taking a picture of them, so someone can tell you what you have, it's handy to know as they all have their good and bad points...

Manuals are probably the best, and easy to tell as you have to rotate a bit on them to engage them, but that is their bad point, as you have to actually get out of the car to do this.

Autos are handy, but prone to issues if not cleaned and used regularly. These engage only when the drive is coming from the gearbox to the wheels, and disengage when the wheels are driving the gearbox. These you have to reverse up about 4 feet after taking the car out of 4WD to disengage them properly.

Fixed are trouble free, but result in the whole front transmission being turned all the time even when the car is not in 4WD, andif there is any wear in the front transmission drive shafts, this will show up more so once you lift the front torsion bars.

It could be the propshaft UJ's too but as you've wound the torsion bars up on the front I'd say that increasing the intensity of the angle of your CV's may have caused your noise.

Makeitfit sometimes refers to this as the "Angle of Dangle" doesn't he :nenau :lol

Take a look at the CV's first I'd say, best of luck

Your spare wheel is what your truck had originally which would mean fixed hubs unless someone has changed them to auto or manual hubs. Can't quite see the front wheel centre on my phone.

Your spare wheel is what your truck had originally which would mean fixed hubs unless someone has changed them to auto or manual hubs. Can't quite see the front wheel centre on my phone.

Why won't the spare fit Blocky?

If Blocky's educated guess is correct and it is fixed hubs, that extra strain on the front shafts is almost definitely the noise, so best get those torsion bars backed off a bit, sooner rather than later.

Cos there's no hole in the centre for a manual/auto hub to fit through.

How on earth did you spot that unless the phot has changed.

I would say with the year and engine it'll be fixed hubs. I'd love a set of fixed hubs and four of the later 17" wheels too.

Seen as this is a quick check just grab the front prop shaft and see if there is a tiny sideways movement with a slight click. My 05 plate did that and it turned out that yes one of the uj's had indeed worn but also the sliding joint had worn too which had a very slight sideways movement. I had my propshaft removed and lived with it like that for several months until I found a good replacement. I managed to get a replacement from an early truck which has the grease nipples on. I've heard people talk about different lengths of propshaft but I only found the one so I can't tell you if there are any different types of shaft or not.

It's the kind of in depth knowledge only a quality T2 owner (3.0Di :thumb2) would know.
