I have noticed that my turbo has started to make some additional sound when driving while there is a higher boost. If I have to do something - which solution provides me best bang for the buck? What would you do?

-take the orig. turbo from my scrap Terrano, install it and save money for something else
-buy a new one with a high price
-buy a recon. one with a cheap price (does these work?)
-take the current one to a turbo shop for overhauling
-take the current one to a turbo shop for overhauling and upgrading
-buy a bigger one which is a "bolt-on", price?

My truck has been driven 340,000km. My spare parts truck has done over 400,000km, so I presume that it has already got a new turbo somewhere in the history.

Comments? Any experience?

Have you inspected your old turbo?

Check all your hose connecting to the turbo, you could have a leak causing the noise. Cheaper air filters and exhausts can also cause noise. A leaking exhaust, maybe not yet bad enough to make a loud noise.

If the turbo is on it's way out I would be tempted to check your spare turbo and fit it to see what it's like.
