Have been in all weather conditions recently. The starter connections seem solid. Its the way that its start got weaker and is now doing nothing that I recon the starters gone caput as it did the same on my transit. .

If it was a gradual degradation and you noticed it was turning over slower and slower then its def you're starter :thumb2

Best to park on a hill and roll it down and bump start it buddy until you can get a new starter

yeah thought so. its booked in for tomorrow but they can't fix it until next friday which is not great, I've booked a van hire with arnold clark for this week. a wee berlingo woop

Multi meter can show the volts but it doesn't mean it's putting out the amps. Car batts should be showing 14.4 volts ish when car is running and around 13 ish + or - not running if it's good.. If you don't know history of batt it would be my first thought.. Can you take battery off and take it to the garage and get them to test it ?? Or borrow a batt to try, anything with a 600ccr should be ok to try it.

Easiest way to know is to go back to the place you bought the meter and they should have a battery tester, they load up the battery and they will tell you if it is the battery or not. If they don't have this bit of kit (they really should) go to another parts supplier.

What I do is if you have a battery that you can take off the 6 tops and see the acid, get someone the turn and hold the key in the start position, if you can see a cell 'gassing' then it kaput :augie

I do have a drop tester so can check. But when I worked at a garage we used this tester - https://www.duriteparts.com/durite_0-524-08_battery_tester_discharge_type_6v_12v_batteries?gclid=Cj0KEQjwxI24BRDqqN3f-97N6egBEiQAGv37hH6Q6hP4l_x1u4m9-PGWRrVD0S2MTvSZCsarQRTPewIaAnmM8P8HAQ

Okay checked the battery its giving 12.44 v and drops to 11.12 when trying to start the car.

So does it just not have enough go to turn the starter?

Can I check the starter with the multi meter?

If it drops to 11.12, then not enough power going to starter, if the starter was pulling the correct current, it could drop as low as 9 volts... depending on the charge and capacity of the battery. So for me, in order of lowest cost and ease of repair, battery connections, connections on starter motor, earth on engine/ starter motor, or Starter motor.
So Rick was right.:clap

To be fair upon reading more of the thread Banshee did hit on it on post 20 I did not read that far back then, Rick
