Hi Guys

so this morning i went to start my truck and the starter sounded really weak. no battery warning light, i borrowed a mates van and tried to jump start it, nothing happening. theres been no problems starting up until now so I'm a bit lost. I'm guessing starter motor failure but could there be something simpler?

cheers again.

could be the switch on the back of the ignition barrel.

its really weak trying to turn until its now doing nothing. hopefully not flooded the engine.

Maybe a long shot, but are the battery clamps properly attached? Had issues with my T2 recently, negative terminal clamp was loose...

When you turn the ignition on, are the warning lights coming on as normal?

When you turn the key, do they all go out?

Have you got a battery that has screw tops to top up? If so undo/take the caps off, get someone to crank the engine over while you look at the battery cells/fluid... do any of the cells bubble? If so the battery is knackered. Sometimes if the battery is real gone, even a jump start won't work.

If it tries to start, then I would not think it is the ignition barrel switch.

Let me know how you get on... :thumb2

Take a look at this thread regarding the ignition switch, also people have said if you turn the key slowly the switch works normally.

Checkout the downloads section as there is a document about checking the positive battery clamp as this can cause problems.

When my starter went a few years ago it seemed like the battery was flat and this happened even just after the engine had been running too. Loads of dodgy starter threads if you look.

Good luck

Checked all connections. Starter motor now makes a loud clicking noise nothing else.

The battery, oil and management light stay on.

The batterys making a click clunk noise if I leave the key turned on. Does that mean anything. I dont have a multi meter but can go get one.

You'll find that will be the Glow Plug Relay clicking on and off and is right next to the battery on the inner wing.

I'm going to say dodgy battery terminals or starter motor, don't worry mate it will be something silly :thumb2

So ive bought a multi meter but what setting do I put it on? Sorry I know jack shiat about this stuff.

The batterys connected okay. I know its just money but ive a big job starting tomorrow and this is just irritating. My garage cant do anything until friday aswell. living the dream haha

sounds like possibly a duff battery.
when my ignition switch started acting up it would put out all the lights on the dash when i turned the key to start.
if i did it really slowly i could get it to catch and start.

Although he said the starter is clicking too - usually a sign the battery is knackered :nenau

Have you got another battery to try?

He should have tested that before coming on here otherwise he's not a real mechanic :p

Okay checked the battery its giving 12.44 v and drops to 11.12 when trying to start the car.

So does it just not have enough go to turn the starter?

Can I check the starter with the multi meter?

I can buy a new battery for £65 thats where I got the multi meter. Haha I know im no mechanic hence all the daft questions haha.

Battery sounds fine to me, check the starter motor connections and if they are OK replace the starter, have you been going through water?
