right, i looked at my terrano engine, and there is just a flat metal cover with no adjustment.
on my navara engine the link below shows it plain as day.

now, it is much easier if you take off the manifold, if you take off the plate, then there must be an adjustment on the underside of the plate. there has to be one, as the off boost delivery of fuel is governed by the pressure put on the diaphragm. if it is there, and it has to be, obviously the increse is done by unwinding it, to make it longer.
the other possibility is that there is no adjustment, which i doubt.
if it turns out that there is no adjustment, one option is to get a plate off of another bosh pump, they may well have some different sizes so check, but any turbo diesel with a bosch unit, golf/polo/jetta,navara,landrover200/300/2.5td to name a few should fit. it has to be a turbo diesel as the connection for the boost hose to the top plate needs to be there to increase fueling when under boost.
i am sorry i cannot be of more help at the mo, it is raining alot right now and did not fancy getting wet.
i need to do this adjustment on mine at some point, so i will do the proper how to probably at the weekend, and i will let you know when i have done it.

Posted this once but it got lost... so I'll try again...

I put the blank cover plate to one side when I took it off, but I left the boost pipe attached, so I couldn't see into the bottom of the plate and don't remember even trying to! Your suggestion about getting a 2nd hand adjustable cover is a good one, and better than my idea of putting washers incrementally under the plate until I get the right fuel delivery!

there might well be a post of fixed length under the plate. if that is the case, you could put a die on it then screw 2 nuts on it and then adjust out so it is about 2.5 mm longer than before. the pitch of the adjuster screw was about 1.25 or 1.5. so as two full turns is about right for the smoke screw adjustment, more sometimes. then 2.5 to 3 mm should be fine. just a real pain to get to. if there is nothing on the underside, just hole punch it centrally then drill, tap and screw in a bolt with a nut on it and then it will be fine. just make sure it is sealed as boost will leak out if it is not.
i am looking at my truck tomorrow for most of the day, so i will look on the underside and let you know. i will also fit my old navara plate ant let you know if it is a straight swap too.

:thumbs
Good luck with what you are doing:thumbs
I can say that since I had my fuel pump reconditioned and fuel tank cleaned and all the fuel pipes renewed my 1995 T2 bombs along:thumbs
Starts on the key and smokes less:cool: It pulls up hill towing no probs
and is great off road:thumbs

right, soggy. the plate has nothing at all on the underside of. so you could drill it and stick a bolt through it with a nut stuck on th top side and another one to lock the bolt off with. however the top plate from my nav fitted straight on, it is taller however the adjustment is still there to wind up the off boost fueling.
i completely forgot to try the top plate off of my 300 tdi engine's f.i.p but i will try it on my navara engine which is on the floor in my garage. i am working tomorrow, but i will do it sunday to let you know. it should fit, but i will let you know definitely if one will. if it does, no doubts at all a golf/polo/jetta one will be a straight swap.

The off boost fuelling is one thing, but to make them really go, you need to open up the max fuelling via the 'smoke screw', have you attacked that ?

yes mate, there is no smoke screw adj on a standard fip. i had to swap my nav top plate with my terrano top plate. i am talking about the smoke screw, i just said off boost. sorry to confuse the issue. i cant believe it does not have one.

Thanks Richard.... I think swapping the top plate is the best answer. Thanks for all your help and advice - much appreciated!

Hi guys,
sorry to jump on board here - i plan on doing this at the weekend.I understand that 1/4 turn on the diapragm is about right to keep EGT's low but is it also 1/4 on the smoke screw,or 180 degrees as the link states?.Do i adjust both or is it either one method or the other?

I would like a bit more go but don't wan't to affect my mpg too much, will it suffer if i do this mod?

thanks.

If you adapt your style to the new power drive 'normally' often mpg stays the same or improves; mainly down to the fact you are into the higher gears sooner (i.e. less rpm) and can hold the higher gears longer due to the increase in torque.

Thanks Timbo,

Had a quick look at mine and it seems that i don't have a smoke screw either, just a plain cap with no prise out centre. So i'm planning to drill/tap and put my own screw in with locknut/sealing washer.

When i come to adjust, should i wind the screqw down until i feel it just contact the diaphragm then go another half turn?

Thanks Tony,

I plan on doing it myself though tbh quite like tinkering with spanners,I'll give it a go this weekend.
