Got the Terrano radiator fitted at weekend and started up, ticks over fine, but when you rev it, there seems to be a bit of a misfire and the engine rocks excessively, even when up to temperature.

I have only driven it up and down the farm track, as the bumper etc is not on yet, and it seems to pull ok.

It sat since September last year, so its maybe lack of use & old fuel?

Think also a glow-plug is maybe out, as it can be a bit lazy at starting when cold, but this shouldn't effect it when warm?

Thanks

First and foremost what colour is the smoke?

If it is plugs it should be a whitish colour, get the Intercooler off and take some readings at each plug with a multimeter, and remove them and check visually, I'd also do the jump lead test on them

When you say excessively rocks how bad are we actually talking? If revved right mine can rock the car from side to side, if you believe it to be really bad then check the engine mounts :thumb2

When we changed our glow plugs the ends had fallen off 2 of them about 2 mm worth I guess it's just luck it didn't cause damage so I would strongly recommend taking them out and inspecting them. And maybe a compression test if you know anyone with a kit just for your peace of mind

Exactly why I went for Lucas metal rod replacements :thumb2

Would a dodgy glowplug cause what seem to be a missfire tho?

It will mate yep :thumb2

Does it get marginally better when the engine is up to temperature or not?

If it doesn't then it could indicate a fuel starvation issue as this manifests itself with similar symptoms except it doesn't clear when the car is up to temp

Ive not driven the car any great distance, just up and down the farm road a few times, i need a bit of welding done to the subframe this week, so hopefully take it for a run next weekend and see if it improves any.

Ive read the Glow Plug sheet in the downloads section, so seems a straightforward job[Famous last words!!] :thumbs

A few words to the wise matey

If you are going to replace, go for metal rod and not ceramic!!!!! Ceramic can disintegrate and drop into the cylinders - search for ricks horror story

Soak the sh*t out of the plugs before you remove them to avoid snapping them, some people go for a plug removal tool, I preferred to use a 12mm long reach socket and kept it dead straight

Sorry to jump in,it's panelbeater here.
I came away Sunday and I started to get loss of power etc towing my van.
I am on the haven site thorpe park at cleethorps,I noted I had s bit of fuel under the front of the t2.lt was fuel.
On inspection I can find no leaks so it might be comming from th ip front seal.
I started it today took a wind up to get going but very little throttle respond.
Miss fire with fuel smoke won't rev,got it up to temp and the same, took it for a test drive and under powered.
Pulled maf out and bearly ideled,no revs, plugged it back and better but still had the problem.
Still missing and smokey.
Help needed fast,only got phone.
Anyone near me please.
Worried its no1 injector or pump seal.
Can seal be done in situ,no tools here at forum mearcy.help please

Hi mate

Don't panic!!! Don't panic!!!!!!!! :thumbs

Right where exactly was the puddle of fuel you found? I'd be looking directly up from the puddle to the chassis and see if you can follow the runs.

If it's front drivers side near wheel then it could be IP I suppose, check the fuel lines as per usual, trace them all back from the filter to the tank, it def sounds like fuel starvation 100% especially as you've found a puddle of fuel too

as Banshee says, but id also get under the drivers side door, and check the fuel lines that go along the sill and UP into the engine bay - if these are leaking, the fuel can end up in all sorts of places and will let a lot of air in. Also double check your filter.

Had an issue with the wifes TDi last week, would not start, and flattened the battery, battery was poor to start with, left it a while and stuck a good battery on it, still no go, left it around 2 hours, and away it went no problem, but got mill light, so did the paper clip and got 47 CPS, removed it, bit awkward on the top of the bell housing, one 10mm bolt hell it was tight, found lots magnetic dust on the face, blue tack is what I used to get it all off and nice and clean, put it back no problem since, Rick

have checked all line and return pipes and ok,leak is dropping from lower cross member under ip pump.
Using a fuel input direct to ip makes no change,i think no1 is the missfire and ip seel gone
Awaiting a call from a mobile ip fitter.
Brother has located no1 injector for about 185 delivered from germany, docs that need setting up.
No increase in sump oil.
Barings in mind i have all new pipes from tank to ip.

Missfire while reving the engine on a stationary truck is normal.
There's a sensor in the gearbox I think that detects the trucks movement. So when stationary the ECU uses a basic map and will cough and splutter a bit . Drive the truck and all's well.
No1 injector/sensor is normally aboiut 125 quid in this country, sorry to tell you :augie
Have you checked leak off spill pipe connection for leakage ? I did all new pipes on mine but didn't do the spill pipe, it had deteriorated from veggie and bio abuse I guess. The result was a lot of fuel all dripping down the side of the engine and could easily look like IP

yeah, Injectors aren't that expensive in the UK, I only paid £125 for mine...!

I have a good No 1 injector for a lot less than that, but just been out and disconnected the wire and it starts and runs fine revving right up, but mil light on, reconnect and it does the normal slight missfire, so think this rules out your injector, dirty CPS is worth a look, Rick

mine has the lift censer in it.
Never had missfire holding revs.
Now revs drop holding throttle steady.

plus, when my injector went faulty, it gave a code. IM not convinced yet its the injector, the fuel pump may have a leak but it could be a pipe loose, or injector pipe loose perhaps...?

Sensor one is what we mean :thumbs
It should have a fault code as said above.
Not holding revs certainly points to other probs. CPS is one and possibly TPS
Have you got MIL on or done a code read ?
