2.7 Maverick...hesitates?

Just had our Maverick up from Ipswich to Redditch & back today - a nerve-wracking 350-mile run for me, given its initial hiccups & lack of reliability, back when we bought it!

Having given it a good run to Harlow & back (about 145 miles round-trip) last Saturday & cleared an airlock in the process (and topping-up as req'd), it ran fine, cruising to Redditch at about 65-73mph average, returning nearly 33mpg (did 37mpg Saturday, but I didn't go over 60mph then) - so I'm well-pleased that it's finally settled down...:thumbs

...But anyone got a clue about occasional heart-stopping "hesitations"? The 'tugs' it gives when the hesitations happen, scared me silly enough to suspect dirty fuel (topped-up at Tesco on standard diesel), or maybe a loose connection on the fly-by-wire throttle...

not sure what you mean. Mine did something similar a while back (still does, just not as bad) where at IDLE only, it would suddenly rev and the whole car would wobble.....

Fly by wire throttle, must be the Tdi version not the Td

Was it raining at the time? how fast where you going?

If the answer is Yes to rain and around 70 mph then its nothing to worry about. its a common fault. The water from the front N/S wheel gets into the air intake and it will cause the engine to cut out for a split second, this is because you can not compress water and it engine spits it back out.

A solution is to fit a K'n'N or a snorkel if this was the problem.

mine does the same .2.7tdi . If i hold the revs at 2000 rpm whilst going along ( its fine when stationary) , it tugs a bit almost feels like wants to cut out but just increase the speed and drive through it. only started to past few months .

when stationary and i rev up and down the engine shudders , did think it was something to do with the turbo , cause doesn't that kick in around then .

not worried yet as i just give it some boot .

Dont use TESCO fuel, mine hates it

It may not be all Tesco fuel in all areas, the fuel in South Staffordshire and West Midlands comes from the Kingsbury refinery near the NEC
It is piped underground from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

This depot supplies all the fuel for all the major suppliers including Tesco and Morrisons, Shell, Texaco etc

The only difference in the fuels are the additives that they put in at the Kingsbury depot.

I have never had any problems with these fuels from our local area.

It could be your Tesco fuel has a higher bio content or additives that release gunge from the tank or fuel lines.

I have the Td, which is probably more tolerant to any fuel anyway.

HOWEVER: the wife's 1.6Hdi Picasso, last month did have a slight hesitation, but we filled up I think in Cheshire, where the fuel comes from Merseyside.

So it could be the source of the fuel that is the issue, not the franchise. :nenau

Kamsin - it was dry on the run, and cruised between 65-73 all the way...

The hesitation was like a very quick 'pulse' that felt like it'd cut out any second - but it carried on as if nowt had happened (except stalled my own pulse rate!). It did it too often over the journey for my liking - though it got worse as the fuel level dropped lower...so maybe it was just shifting crud, as Rustic commented.

Oh, well - just have to see how it goes, eh? Just got to sort the windscreen washer pump now (stopped!), fix the trim/seal back on the drivers' door 'card'... Hey-ho!

I'm still confused, is it a TD or a TDI? How old is it and has it got an air scoop on the bonnet? :nenau

mine did this on m4 as well as again two to three months later stick an in line fuel filter on bypassing the main fuel filter and see how it runs ( should run better) at filter head you may have a plate with two wires and four screws if so undo screws and gently pry the top off will stick just be firm. check the inlet and outlet to this as it is before the filter. the probability is that this is blocked..... i will try to find picks of what i mean and how bad mine was. mine has run perfect til recently did it again two weeks ago just did as described and runs well again....

hi what polty is talking about is a heated fuel filter, yours isnt . but putting a inline filter on is a good idea but i would put it in the tank feed going in to the filter that way you,ll be able to see any crap that comes through. have you changed the fuel pipes you could be getting air in system.

why do I ask? or why does it have a scoop?

if it's the second question it's for air for the intercooler that the TD doesn't have. The first because I'm nosey and it isn't clear from your siggy :thumb2

Yerst, Plank - yer a nosey b*gger!!! :lol I knew why the scoop was on there - somewhat obvious, when you lift the bonnet and the intercooler matrix is right there in yer face, eh? I just thought you wanted to clarify which Mav I had for a technicackle reason, like it might have a dingle-valve blocked, or a cracklebox wiring fault...or summat....
Nuffink so detailed - I simply forgot to type a little "i" in the first post, as I'd had a looooooooong day's driving and was really ssssssssssleeeeeeepyyyyy...

Anyway, I'll look into the extra inline filter - cheers for that tip, guys! (I haven't touched any fuel lines at all, so I doubt it'll be an airleak - I'll just have to work along it, bit by bit, eh?:thumbs

Im having the same problem with my 2.7TDI
I think my MAF is poorly. Have you checked yours?
Or have you found out what the problem was?
