for those that have seen my thread "Mud play tomorrow" and the subsequent head gasket failure, just thought I would start a new thread in the correct place as it looks like running on more than it should, I should have been back on the road this afternoon, but as soon as I saw the package I knew all was not well, and it was not, the gasket produced had 6 big holes in it and I only need 4:eek: so now I have to wait again till tomorrow for the desperately needed part, on the good side I have fabricated a twin electric fan to replace the viscous unit that failed, hardest part was locating a brass or copper threaded fitting to graft into the side of a short length inch and a half copper pipe for the sensor/switch in the bottom hose, it was a thread that was hard to find, must try and take some pics for you all, Rick

Excellent mate, sounds like the fan mod needs a thread of its own with lots of pics ...

:augie :thumb2

I was going to fit a kenlowe fan, but at £120 i can get 2, 12" fans for about £44 on flebay.

What did you use for the cut out/in for the fans though.

Sorry tale to tell today, finally got the head gasket at 3pm running by 6pm but bag of bones, clearly more damage was done, the bores looked OK so did not suspect picked up pistons, so maybe cracked block, whatever it is shagged, so now need to remove the good engine from the off road motor (something I intended to do as it is a better engine than my one) but needed the push to get on with it, in the mean time some pics to look at, the head and 8 thou feeler between pots in this pic

now for the fans, I will not do a separate thread on this as there is an excellent write-up in the down load section all ready the fans I used were left overs from banger racing so cannot identify them, I masticked them to the rad to avoid vibration movement with the conventional method of a special type of cable tie that is supplied with add on fans,

In answer to Fez, the stat/switch is screwed into the side of the copper tube in the pic, I have no idea what vehicle it came off as again it was in the accumulated junk left over from bangers, I simply went through all the sensors looking for one that read open circuit and then warmed it up and if it then went closed circuit then it will be the sort of switch I need, this is used to drive a relay that when closed feeds full battery power to the fans (as much as 30 amps) fused of course, the earth clamp is required as this particular switch only has one wire and the other is through the body hence the earth connection, I did not take any pics of the head re assembly as time was short, but now I have to change the engine I will try and record the interesting parts, Rick

I used a temp switch from x-eng but only kicks in at higher temps 9 -10o'clock ish.

I used 2 fans from ebay, but I think I need bigger ones or clean my rad out more.

Need to get a new starter before all that though.

I would go down to your local scrappy and get fans there, even cheap new fans are £50 plus, far too much, I would not pay more than £20 for the sort of fans in my pic, as for switches depends where they were fitted originally (flow or return) and where they are fitted now, two 9 inch should be fine, Rick

I like those fans:naughty I'm also fitting an electric fan to my terrano. Using the AC fan off my scrap SE and wiring it though a illuminated switch. on the dash. Just waiting for it back from a mate who has a sand blaster

Well got the good engine out of the off roader today, getting the front diff out is a bit of a pig, specially with 6 inches of hard dry mud caked round it, sorry no pics but may try and take some tomorrow of the engine removal from the on road T2, this motor is a lot cleaner so pics may mean a bit more, Rick

Two 9" fans wont cut it on the diesel lump, and that's acool engine
Working hard off road will need more like 12" and 14" fans
Mine hardly switch on at all in normal driving, but off road is a different story. What I find is once the temp starts to rise on the gauge it takes a lot of fan action to get it down again. I reckon the sensor needs to kick in at lower temp on the first fan then bring the second in at higher temp.:D

but your lump is by no means standard, = much more heat to be lost, Rick

Oh and sorry, I sort of guessed that the fans in the pic were 9 inch, in fact one is 11 inch and the other is 12 inch, I was thinking of a lot of other stuff at the time, and the mind is not as sharp as it once was, Rick

still a lot better than my mind though rick lol

think mine are too small, also using a thermo switch for a landrover engine. so temp cut in might not be perfect.

But plan on getting bigger ones and have switches to turn both on at will. currently I can only turn the low temp fan on at will.

This is the front diff on a T2 one hell of a beast I can tell you, very difficult to balance and keep aligned, and that is getting it out, tomorrow I will be trying to get it back in, Rick
