...but if you have had your motor for a long time you will already know what to look for :thumb2...

Ahhh.. now you mention it...

Good link, it looks like the main fail points are on the front end, with suspension and drive etc

What gets me is the failures associated with lighting problems...:doh:doh

Mind you, on any night drive on the motorway clearly shows failed bulbs on No. plate lights, brake lights, head light bulb failure, and worse headlight hulbs not fitted correctly with poor aim.
I would guess that up to 5% of cars on the road have some lighting defect.
It's not difficult to test them....
Walk around the car then get a stick and wedge the brake pedal down from the seat squab.

Right... now who carries a set of replacement bulbs in their car?

2nd question... now who carries a set of replacement bulbs in their car that actually fit those in the actual car? :doh:doh

Eg... orange painted indicator bulbs have a different base, and not all brake light bulbs have dual filiaments and although difficult, you can actually fit a dual filiament bulb in 180 degrees out, so you have a 5 watt brake light and a 21 watt side light.

I gave up carrying a spare set, for the exact reason you said, most of the kits you buy, don't have the right bulbs in anyway, and I did find that often you carry the kit around for so many years, that by the time you do need a bulb from it, the one you need has had the filament knocked off in all the carting around it has had.

I am lucky, I reverse into my drive, so can check my front lights in the windows of the house opposite, and my rear lights by their reflections on my trailer that is parked across the drive behind the car.

I check them all the time, and just change the bulb when I notice one is out from a load of spares I keep in a large component box in the garage. I have bulbs from so many cars, going back over the years, I still have many that will not fit the T2... The thing is, in this day, and age, there are so many places open 24/7 that sell bulbs, and I have enough extra lights on my car, I would rather drive to somewhere safe, and buy the correct new bulb, than risk stopping to change the bulb then and there, messing around at the side of the road.

We got through three headlight bulbs on the Picasso on the near side in less than two weeks... always the dipped beam...:doh

So the two replacements had been in the car for years, rattling around in their box, so maybe they age even when stored in the glove box...

The last one we put in was brand new, and it has been fine for six months so far...:augie

At first I thought it was the connector, as they hadn't been handled.

I was told, and I must admit I took it with a pinch of salt, but when a light is on, it anneals the metal, and helps to keep it flexible, where as when it is off, it just vibrates up and down, slowly work hardens, which is why Fog lights always seem to blow despite being one of the least used on the car.

I use my front fogs all the time coz my headlights are useless. (I turn them off when vehicle approaching)
