my dad past & left me his 1989 Terrano 2.8Diesel auto , i got it started and drove it on the roads in cyprus, but seems like it’s in a low gear ! it does not accelerate! or sound like it changes up in gears! local mechanics say it’s the transmission but cannot be sure until the pull it apart. i don’t want to spend money on it if its not repairable or if too old for parts. Any ideas?

Clean maf / replace

here's the AT section from the manual.
there's a diagostic procedure you can run to check the electrical side of things.
could be a dodgey selenoid or just low on transmission fluid.
