its like anything, you get what you pay for. if you pay more you get a better winch

to true extreme, but proberly ideal if on a limited budget and dont use to often. :thumb2

Hi Tezzer
I have one of these winches. I purchased mine through Auto Lift.
http://www.electricwinchshop.co.uk/products/Auto-Lift-Uk-12000lb-12v-Winch.html

The winch is good and power full and has not let me down yet. You will need to make sure you have a good Battery as the winch pulls a lot of power on full load and killed my first Battery.
The winch does get hot when used for long hard pulls and you need to let it cool down but i have found it ok for the money.

thanks tommo, i'm thinking of getting one in the new year if money permits, i agree with extreme's coment, but i wont be doing much off road work, there's now where to go in the way of laning around where i live, there is some off road courses everdently but they are really rough and not suitable for road going vehicles unless heavily modified, i dont want to do that, anyway thanks for your comment:thumb2 :D

my best advice i can offer... buy the best winch you can afford. get the very best winch fixings. cos the winch is only as good as the fixings

buy books and watch you tube videos on how to use your new winch so you dont pick up other peoples bad habits

and most of all look after it

I agree with extreme-4x4 on this, Winches take a lot of looking after the steel rope needs inspecting after every time you have used it for damage, none of the cheaper ones are watertite so need to be pulled apart and re greased on a regular basis.
These winches are dangerous pieces of kit if used wrong so you will need to learn how to use it safely.
My winch mountings have been fabricated by my self and are welded direct to the chassis and then a winch mounting plate bolted to them over engineered and heavy but better safe than sorry these winches pull over 5 tons and it all sits behind the original bumper.
If you are only gong to use it for green laning and the occasional off road site i would be looking at a detachable one to Carry with you this can then be used at ether end of your truck, all one on the front can do is pull you forward. Once you have a winch fitted you will spend more time recovering other people than yourself or it seams that way.
The other down side to a winch is you will be adding about 45kg of weight to the front of your truck.
This all sound a bit negative about having a winch thay are a good piece of kit to have and do look good on the front of trucks but is it worth the expense and trouble for me yes it is.
Tommo

I don't have any pictures of the winch mounts at the moment i will try and get some i a couple of days.
This was the first attempt but put the winch to low causing approch angle problems.

After the body lift i also lifted up the winch this has made it a lot better the bumper has now been tyded up around the winch.

Remember to budget for decent cabling and solenoids/contactors when buyng a winch, and get the solenoids mounted up out of the way on the dry somewhere.

ahh.. yep with it now seen them on landies

Tommo, nice looking truck mate, I like the "understated but very capable" look. If I ever get around to a winch, (would probably never use it), this would be the way I would go.

Tommo, Terranosaurus, wise words from you both. :bow Winches are dangerous in the wrong hands. I've seen all sorts of muppets using them at pay-and-play days, stepping over the taught cable etc etc. :doh

Lee.

Just noticed that I'm now a senior member ! Right, where's my pipe and slippers !
