'02 maverick engine light

Hi, i have a 2L . petrol '02 maverick.

The engine light is coming on and giving me code p0401 which as far as i can tell is the egr valve, i took it off and cleaned it (wasnt that dirty) drove a few miles and it came back on with the same code, any ideas or experience with this anyone ?

Thoroughly check the vacuum pipes for any minute leaks.

P0401 is the oxygen sensor circuit which is the sensor in the exhaust pipe.
