Veg Oil or Dirty Oil (Diesel)

I use 100% SVO when it's warm and 50/50 in winter, I have a heat exchanger fitted before the filter and it all goes fine, starts absolutely fine in the winter. However, I would warn against using used, filtered oil even from a reputable supplier. I used to buy used oil, 1000 litres at a time...

    s.v.o. versus m.p.g

The tank is closer to 70 litres I reckon, the best way to check mpg without danger of running out, is the way makeitfit suggests. I think you're probably safe to go to 50% this time of year, but I don't believe you get more mpg using veg oil. More economy, yes, but probably marginally less mpg...

    s.v.o. versus m.p.g

I've never used pure diesel in mine, so I have nothing to compare it to, and it's not very precise, I know, but I reckon on 400 miles full to empty on 100% SVO which works out at 25-26mpg. This is not driving 'hard' but it is driving without any concern for economy. I also didn't by mine for...

    Starting problem

Yep, it's a Platinum or Iridium filament in a ceramic sheath apparantly! By the way, the Terrano burst into life this afternoon and sat there ticking over like a Swiss watch again. Hopefully that's done it. The problems were knackered glowplugs, lazy starter and a blocked filter and hopefully...

What's the glowing tip made of then? I assumed it was ceramic

    Starting problem

Yes, I've used 5-10% petrol when the weather's started to get cold, but having seen the state of the glow plugs ie absolutely no ceramic left!, I'd have to question the wisdom of that. I treated the Fourtrak in exactly the same way for about 30,000 miles and it was absolutely fine, the Terrano...

    Starting problem

I'd probably best brace myself for the onslaught from the anti Veg oil lobby. The inside of the tank is very clean, I've been in there. I've used SVO all summer (new oil) and with the drop in temperature, I've added 50% diesel and anti waxing additive. I'm going to guess that the detergent...

    Starting problem

Thanks chaps, I'm getting 55, so I'm assuming there's a simple old fashioned blockage in the fuel supply somewhere. The fuel looks clean enough, but the filter cartridge, despite being relatively new, looks surprisingly dirty inside. I'll get a new one this afternoon, whoosh all the fuel lines...

    Starting problem

Blimey! what a response! Thanks for that! The car is a '98 2.7TDi with Bosch fuel pump. The fuel filter has done at least 1000 miles, and was well primed initially (priming plunger solid). The glow plugs are getting voltage and getting red hot. I've just had an injector hose off and turned it...

    Starting problem

Sod's Law, I was driving along last week thinking how light and lively the Terrano feels when it's going well, but it's so heavy when you have to push it, the next day, I had to push it. The starter was getting increasingly sluggish, but still starting, then I was out, having started it twice in...

SVO WVO DIESEL Heater Exchanger Kit- before Inj.-pump

I used the glow plug type heater for a while in conjunction with the heat exchanger. I hoped that the electrical unit would allow for quicker oil warm up from cold, and to be fair, it may have been a faulty unit, but it didn't seem to do the job. I had a light on the dash to show when the thing...

SVO WVO DIESEL Heater Exchanger Kit- before Inj.-pump

I used one of those glow plug heaters a year or so ago and found it completely useless and unreliable. This type on the other hand http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FLAT-PLATE-HEAT-EXCHANGER-biofuel-vegetable-oil-WVO-/120575653186?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c12de7542 is...

    Precautionary tale

I'll try and get a picture, but on engines with the Bosch fuel pump, on the injector of cylinder 4 (rearmost) there's a rubber cap on the top, you can just see it and it's easily accessible, but potentially could leave you stranded if it splits. I don't think the Zexel equipped engines have it...

    Precautionary tale

Coming to the end of a long drive yesterday I stopped briefly and noticed that the underside and back of my car as well as my trailer were covered in fuel oil. The rubber cap on the rearmost fuel injector had split and was spraying fuel freely, I must've lost about 3 gallons before I noticed it...

misfire at high revs in neutral

Got it!:thumb2 If they floored the throttle on mine during MoT, I'd floor them!:lol:lol

misfire at high revs in neutral

Without wishing to take the piss, I can't help wondering why you'd want to floor the throttle in neutral. What can be acheived from revving a lazy, heavy flywheeled diesel?

    Caution: Red Bull garage

They missed an opportunity there, that's the ideal position for Waxoyling the chassis!

    Diesel Fuel Pump

yeah, the heat exchanger is a fuel heater for SVO/WVO

    Diesel Fuel Pump

I've done over 500 trouble free miles now, so it was just a severe blockage after all! Thanks to all who offered advice!:thumb2:thumb2 Mike
