    This is probably a stupid question but why would this break when 4 wheel drive is not engaged?

    Thanks for the replies. The garage said the drive shaft may have caused damage to the diff because the hub had jammed, is this likely? Banshee- would like to take you up on that offer. This is the damaged brake ring
