    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

I think this great long saga is now close to a conclusion. After another adjustment of both the stop screw and VNT rod length on the turbo, I now get ..... In neutral (hot): Increasing revs slowly from idle to 3500 rpm, boost rises to a peak of 8-10 psi around 3200 rpm and then falls backl...

    Tyre pressure pulling a caravan

If you have an Alko hitch, the noseweight limit will be 100kg, so you should not go over that. Andrew

    Tyre pressure pulling a caravan

I used to set pressure to the factory settings on the 'Trolls door surround - 29psi front and 32 psi rear. At 32 psi, the rears wear a LOT more in the middle than at the edges, so much in fact that it has reduced tyre life substantially. I've just bought a new set of General Grabber AT2 and...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

Yep, that's what I've been doing I installed a boost pressure gauge a month or so ago. The dawes installation should be easy - just tee into the pressure hose going to the gauge sensor for one end of the dawes - and then from the other end of the dawes to a tee in the vacuum hose that goes...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

Just to let you guys know that I'm throwing in the towel on this overboost business. I've got the turbo VNT adjusted as best I can, but it still overboosts above 2500 rpm under load on large throttle - about 18 psi and ping, there is goes :( No, I'm not getting rid of the Patrol - nor am I...

    Fitting a boost gauge - ZD30

In the end, this was easier than I had feared. I did, though, adopt a (probably) unusual way of accessing the intake airstream. I manufactured a 6mm thick aluminium plate the same shape and with the same fixing holes as the base of the boost sensor (MAP sensor). I then drilled and tapped a...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

The turbocharger in a ZD30 Patrol engine doesn't have a wastegate. The turbo has a set of vanes that are moved by a vacuum operated VNT actuator and they can stick if they are gummed up - but that definitely isn't the problem with mine. Andrew

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

I've had another look at the diagram in the manual. Pin 5 is also connected to ground - so iot shouldn't make any difference which is used. Ho hum ....... Andrew

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

Did you wire it like this (per ECUTalk instruction) .... or like this (workshop manual for Patrol with ZD30)......... Note where ground is connected to Best of luck Andrew

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

Ah, that's why I don't see a green light. :thumbs Yes, at the moment, ECUTalk keeps trying to connect to the com port, fails & retries after 5 secs. It just repeats that. My 16-pin plug being wired wrongly might explain my problem - but it doesn't explain yours. Do you have the .NET 1.1...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

A minor move forwards on this and a potential solution to (one of) my problem(s). The connection diagram for the 16-pin OBDII socket from ECUTalk is: http://www.ecutalk.com/images/OBDII.jpg It shows the ground (earth) connection as pin 5. The circuit diagram on page EC-4037 of the dealer...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

What I have is one of these: http://www.ecutalk.com/interface/usbcable.jpg If I plug the cable into the netbook, it is recognised and the USB serial driver is installed. After connecting to the OBD socket in the Patrol, when I start ECUTalk, it tries to connect to the ECU via COM3 but...

    Overboost problem, 2005 Patrol

Mmmm ......... that was a very optimistic take on the current position. I still have the overboost problem at 2500rpm-3000rpm under load at half throttle or more. I've got myself a laptop, a copy of ECUTalk and an ECUTalk cable which I've had to mod by lopping the 14 pin plug and replacing...

    Its tyre time again

Nope, I'm wrong. There was an older AT which wasn't much good (according to some). There is a new one too ....... http://www.4site4x4.co.uk/news.aspx?id=15 Andrew

    Its tyre time again

I'm pretty sure that I'm going for General Grabber AT2 again. (I think the AT is an older version with a different tread pattern). Its just a matter of finding out where I can get them cheapest. At BlackCircles, fitted, 265/70 R17 AT2s are £145.39 each. I bought them from A-C Tyres in...

cleaning hitachi maf with nail polish remover ?

Isopropanol (aka Isopropyl alcohol, aka brake cleaner) is widely used as a cleaner/degreaser for all sorts of sensitive stuff - tape heads, camera lenses, camera sensors and so on. It doesn't leave a residue IF it is very high purity. You can buy it cheaply on Ebay. Andrew

    Its tyre time again

I've just had a look around the tyres (265/70 R17) on my Patrol and the fronts are looking decidedly worse for wear - small tears and cuts on sidewalls. The rears are down to about 4mm tread in the middle. It's MOT time soon, so maybe I need to think about getting some new ones. The tyres...

A 2005 Patrol is a Consult-II jobbie, so is neither EOBD or OBD-II compliant - though the diagnostics connector is OBD-II format (physically, but not electrically). Andrew
