as jace said the early ZD30 engine, from 2000 ish on, had a habit of melting pistons. they fixed it from 2003 ish but stopped selling the SWB in the uk then. you can still get a SWB in the current style on the continent.
my choice would be a 1st generation SWB from 1998 to 2000 with the 2.8TD, i looked at one but they have slightly less room in the back than the Y60, and with my big mutt to lug around i need every inch!!! http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...0092007124.jpg |

piston problem
My troll has done nearly 140000mls and as far as Im aware thez no piston problem yet. She still gets to 100mph in 3.5. -groovy- It had the head gasket changed last year, other that avad no major probs so far. Tried a hurricane chip on it an shortly afterwards it needed a new air flow meter (£365). Needless to say av left the chip disconnected since. Im very happy with performance both off and on road. Wouldnt swap this baby for a hummer. Well. Maybe. No Id rather put a big yank block in mine. :

sold well over here so its harder to see the stats of those affected. but in oz where they are sold by the thousands they have noticed big problems. AFAIK the problem is something to do with overboosting melting the pistons. later down the line nissan fitted a bigger sump to enlarge oil capacity and oil jets to cool pistons/bores ( or something along those lines anyway!) the guys over there that have them all block the EGR valves and fit boost and EGT gauges to keep a close eye on what the engine is up to. some even carry a spare MAF just in case |

few the guys on navara forum with 3l navaras say exactly that improved oil galleries etc disconected egr and a oil breather trap to catch the oil save it going into engine nissans response was to deny problem existed yet toyota oz did total recall on land cruisers for duff big ends

For anybody with a ZD30 patrol take a look at this document ,
it was written by a member of patrol4x4.com and is an in depth profile of this model of patrol, there are also some relavant bits to other models as well as the ZD30. may even be of use to you navara boys too engine wise? be patient if your connection isnt the fastest as they are quite big PDF's http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showp...1&postcount=12 |
