Surely the problem lies with the seller and the post office, i can see no reason why you should lose out and the post office should pursue the seller for payment.

this whole "selling for a mate "thing is no excuse, at the time, it was his responsibility. you could, i suppose, call it fraud too? perhaps even theft to some degree.

Angry VEL cheque trail

There is a chain here, you were the innocent purchaser, if he had the vehicle for only 6 days he is clearly a mini trader so he should either pay for the 10 months tax or refund you part of the purchase price to cover his misrepresentation. As a trader its his problem and the buck stops with him.

If he did buy it as an innocent purchaser (big if) not a trader then he goes back to the chap he bought it from until someone reaches the chap with the rubber cheque.

In the real world I would try to get some sort of deal with the bloke you bought it off.

Presumably you did not follow DVLA advice on buying a vehicle to avoid being conned such as the seller being the registered keeper and viewing the vehicle at his address. Yes I know its not how you find a bargain!

When I was a Custody Sergeant we had one bloke who was selling cars that belonged to the company he worked for and he sold about a dozen cars with log books mostly privately to the tune of £150K before he was caught. I felt sorry for one of his female victims who lost £13,000 with no hope of getting any compensation-she had a 5 year bank loan to pay back and no vehicle.

He was in charge of a vehicle compound of a vehcle lease company that supplied courtesy cars for people who had been in an accident.

He worked at a Midlands depot that had over 600 cars throughout the UK. He had been out of prison for about 18 months when he landed the job as compound manager and boy did he make it pay!

i aggree with previous posts, the buck stops with the person you bough the car from and no one else, you take it up with him, his argument with them is his problem.

don't traders need to be reistered with local authority now? call local trading standards for advice!
