I need to talk to those that know

Morning all

My pregnant wife and I are emigrating to Australia, probably in 2012. We would like to drive from Woking to Brisgane so I've come here for some advice on which vehicle to use for the trip, and how to prep it. I will post up more detailed threads separately.

Thanks. I was also thinking Patrol or Landcruiser. Possibly a Hilux even. I wonder if it would be possible to buy and kit a vehicle out (not including camping gear, just to make it get there reliably) for £10k?

I think a patrol would be a wise option, there are a lot of knowledgable people here who will be along to advise, but i have noticed the availability of off roading parts for patrols is good on Aussie websites I think Nissans are pretty popular over there.

With that kinda budget there's not much else to choose - a G-Wagon is about the only other vehicle I'd suggest but they are so much more to buy in the first instance buy what a vehicle. Don't even think about Landies, people do go overland with them but the prep work is imense and you'd end up in OZ with a LR where all the dealers stock stuff for Jap 4x4s.

With Landcruisers and Hilux you'd need to look for a front live axle version, Amazon not Colorado (IIRC) for the Cruiser and fairly early and almost always single cab for a Hilux - a troll or a cruiser would be the thing to use - you'd have niceties like aircon and decent seats - its a long way to OZ. Theres also the high roof version like BAT had - I'm sure he'll be along soon enough.

First part of the journey might be a bit of a pig - getting out of Woking can be hell I hear.

I visited my brother in Oz earlier this year, and everyone has either a LC, Patrol or Holden sports utility thing.

Looking at the LC's it seems that the 4.2 80 and 90 ranges are best. With the Patrols, which years/models/engines should I be looking at?

i dont know of any amphibious patrol's, hardest job will be the snorkel and exhaust pipes,

Hello Fridayman.
Why not try a big old Merc diesel estate.Not a 4x4 but will go there for half the price and great reliability as well. No probs with repairs as half the world use them as taxis!
Just an alternative view,but my old 220 cdi estate with 214,000 miles on the clock would get there "no bother"

Hi Mike. I have an opportunity here to buy a big 4x4 with the wife's permission. It's going to take a lot more motor than an old Merc estate for me to give that up I did a bit of off-roading in Oz earlier this year (we hired a Hilux camper and did a 3 week trip) and I now have my heart set on a 4x4!

i think id be looking at a left hand drive . if your serious. reason being if you make it there with a r/h/d it'll be pretty worthless.
a left hooker will still be an asset . i recon the trol or landcruiser is the key

as terra says the G wagon is the best and all parts are still available if needed super reliable and out of the box off road ready

might even find the G when in oz could turn out to be a little goldmine.

if it was me id be looking for a G wagon or troll from germany or alike in left hand drive and away you go

oops just googled it ... yes they do .

ok buy rhd then forget buying a german one
