Default New Maverick owner

Hi All,

I've just got myself a 98 Ford Maverick and a friend of mine told me about this really helpful forum - so i decided to cough up my tenner.

I've had the car about a week now and I'm enjoying every minute - the car is not perfect but is fun!!

The car is a bit scruffy on the inside but hopeful a good clean out this weekend and a visit to the scrappy should get some of the missing bits!!

It's due it's MOT soon so I'm taking it to get a full service then MOT at the local garage who I trust.
I know the exhaust is blowing so I'm going to see if i can get it over a pit to see if it's a welding job before I send it in.

Overall I am happy but sometime the bugger cuts out at low revs - have you chaps any ideas what this could be?

Hello and welcome!!

I have a 97 Mav, and although very VERY troublesome for me, i love it.

now then, your cutting out at low revs...do you mean idle, or when your moving, and if so, how low are the revs?

Let me tell you briefly my issues over the past year that resulted in cutting out. I had to replace the earth lead that attached from the engine block, to the inner wing behind the battery, have a look, mine was corroded where it had rubbed on the inner wing. Also I have a CPK sensor fault, this will most certainly cause cutting out, but usually coupled with another issue (mine only seems to cut out at idle, and when warm after a few miles), so get those codes checked!!! MAF will usually cause power issue, but not sure it will cause cutting out, normally if they are faulty you can unplug them and not notice much of a change.

what else...hmmmm....fuel filters yes, get underneath and check the pipes, all you need is a good inspection lamp to light it up, but to be honest, the VERY FIRST thing I would do, is get the codes, because I can almost guarentee if you are cutting out, there will be an error code. Its dead easy, takes 5 mins. see the download section.

good luck

The car cuts out as I'm about to move off, not all the time and it's fine when moving.
I've gone from standing to moving in first and second gear fine, just sometimes it cuts out.
When I re-start most times the engine management light comes on - i would think that would be me just upsetting it starting so quickly?

Most of the time it is fine but maybe when I drive home from work one evening it's like the cars got a cob on with me and wants to cut out!!

Thanks for the advice!

Welcome aboard, I'd def agree with Clivvy to read your faults. Besides the link that Clivvy sent there's loads more downloads within the Quick Links menu.

nope, no way, if that light comes on, theres a fault code. Its not always "water in the filter" that makes it go on and off, and just because it goes off it doesnt mean the fault is rectified. Check those codes asap, problems like this only get worse over time....all you need is a paper clip.
