From South Wales
Hi all, I bought a Terrano 3l auto a couple of months ago mainly for towing my caravan. Sadly I started to hear a noise from the gear box area which has gradually become louder. I have been informed that it is probably the transfer box. I've looked online for breaking 3l autos but there doesn't seem to be any around. Any guidance on where to look for a replacement transfer box would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Paddy |

Never heard of transfer box problems on a T2 doubt you could ever beak one unless you run it with no oil, welcome by the way, Rick

Hi Banshee, thanks for the welcome and the swift reply! I live by Chepstow but work in Bristol so a lunch meet is a no go sadly. An after work meet may not be possible this evening but if I can make it, I wouldn't be able to make it to Cardiff until around 8pm! Are you likely to be around the weekend or next week if I can't make it?
Hi Rick, It was a Land Rover specialist that I work next to that took the Terrano out for a drive to diagnose - by his own admission he only sticks to Land Rovers because that's what he knows. The oil levels were fine but that could have been topped up just before I bought the car I guess. |

This noisy box, is it the same in all gears or just one or two? Rick

Hi Rick, it is probably only in 3rd and 4th. I took Banshee for a ride this evening but there was too much road noise with the rain so we couldn't hear it

If it was anything to do with the transfer box it would do it in all gears, your LR guy is used to those and they have a third diff, T2's have no such diff, if it is noisy in 4th then that pretty much rules out lay shaft problems so a failing main shaft bearing is a possibility, but more info is needed to make a better diagnosis, Rick

That clacky sound. It increases with rpm? Is that at standstill or driving and under load?

That's driving, slowing down from about 50mph. It only kicks in once I've been driving at around 50mph constantly for about 5 or 10 minutes. After that you can hear it from about 30mph and above

To be honest if that is all it is I would not worry till it gets much worse, one of my earlier T2's had a loud whine in all gears apart from 4th 10k later it was just the same, these boxes are solid, Rick

Sorry for the late response, was great to meet you Paddy!!!
That's deffo not one of the two noises I heard yesterday, in summary I suspect you have a whistling front down pipe which is why your turbo is so audible in the cabin and then there was that whining coming from what I suspected was the injector pump,get that wheel off and wheel arch rubber out the weekend and have a listen. That noise there in the audio clip is worrying similar to the noise I started to get when my manual box fail and appeared to be bearing/bearing casing that had failed and being spun around inside the gearbox. This is what i found when I stripped my box down,I've copied the pics out of my project thread as you won't be able to see them as you're not a member yet;
