Vans On Driving License

My eldest son wants to know how to find if he's licensed to drive a vehicle at work. He's got his basic driving license that he passed about three years ago. At work they have a transit with a luton body on it. Does anyone know how to find out the class of van and if it's on his license. He's not sure if it's been modified since new and if any weight change would effect it's class.

i think dvla have a system online where you enter driving lic number and then explains what you can and cant drive i am sure there was a post on here this year regarding it maybe wrong its all about weight on vans

My guess is the Luton is over 3500kg. So no

I would have thought the company would have a person responsible for transport, they would have the V5 and on it will be the taxation class, in fact, they will also have a list of approved drivers and copies of their driving licences, to fulfil insurance cover etc, so a quick comparison over a coffee and a kitkat could soon resolve the query.
There might also be a minimum driver's age limit too.

If he is trying to borrow the van on the quiet without company approval, he could get disciplined.

Pretty sure most van lutons are under 3500, my mates is anyway. should say on the v5 anyway

If you look at the actual driving licence it will say what groups he is entitled to drive. It is in fairly plain language and the Govt website will explain them in more detail.

As I recall the main changes brought in were to put an age restriction on certain classes of vehicles and it brought in new groups for vocational driving. e.g.Mini Buses etc.

If you post his licence groups and the particulars of the van it should be easy to check.
As others have said his firm should know the law and have a duty of care towards employees.

He drove vans and half n halfs for the council where he worked before, he's now employed by a university so was wondering about their vans. Indeed there will be someone who should be able to sort it out in an office where he works. He's not trying to borrow on the quiet, think he just wants to get out driving around for them. Think it's more a case of the people he works with haven't got a clue about the actual vans.

beware whilst transits have always fell into the sub 3500kg, there are some that are
4600kg, mind usually have a 200hp diesel.
