Been looking options please
I've been looking at 3.0 terrano preferably manual loads down south at mo but only a few up north. However a garage close by has a 03 2.7 manual basic spec (not bothered) for £3000 but it only has 40,000 miles and in great condition one owner full history your thoughts..... Maybe a bit pricey. I'm just thinking it could be a good trade off in this condition apposed to a 3.0 with at least 110,000 miles... Your thoughts please

Low Mileage can mean a more worn out engine than high !
The worst vehicle I ever bought was a very low mileage Petrol Opel Ascona 1600 it was under 10 k miles and about 9 years old when I purchased her. It had FSH with annual oil & filter changes.
Trouble was it basically did a run from Farm to village Church on a Sunday for most of its life. The result was very high cylinder bore wear due to running on choke on most journeys causing sump dilution. Everything was badly worn including valve guides, timing chain, oil pump etc etc. By comparison when I replaced the timing chain on our old Manta GT/E at 100k miles due to tensioner guide wear a task that meant taking off the cylinder head and removing the front cover I was stunned to find the valve guides were still within manufacturers limits and there was no lip at the top of the bores! Since then I have within reasonable limits been happy to buy vehicles that have done over 70k miles. Our old W124 260E had around 105k when we bought it and had over 180k when sold. |

Hi, came across this and as we are talking mileage. Watch out for Terrano's that have had the mileage clocks replaced as they can be prone to failure. I use this link as a possible example dealer claims 60,240 miles but the truck lost around 26,000 mile on the clock in 2008 according to the MOT check. The dealer has not quoted the roughly 86,500 actual mileage. I agree with low mileage can = trouble. My wife has a very low mile vw golf gt petrol, this car has been nothing but trouble from the start with problem after problem and it continues to this day and an ongoing dangerous electrical issue problem reared it head again today.. this car is genuine low miles but it is older at 2004, the first 6 months it had warranty and had £2500 spent on it via the warranty, the car only cost £2700, we have also spent £600 since.. it is honestly the worst car we have ever had... it is however in lovely condition...a real friday afternoon cant be arsed car this.. so be aware of low milers however the terrano is pretty basic but rust is a killer.

Well had look at a couple of lower priced local 2.7 03/04 trucks today, you lads were not kidding about rust blimey!!!! I have been checking out mileage history from government website and a lot of trucks have these as failures or advisories too. Ilooked at a shogun 3.2 while I was out and that had rotten rear arches too, they are some scum bag car sales people out there for sure. I'm gona book a test drive in another tomorrow. Here is a typical response from Arthur Daley, Mark asks in email what's the car like underneath? Salesperson replies rock solid mate, Mot advisory states corrosion to chassis where rear arch meets seat belt secure bolt. Might be having second thought on a terrano!

rear seat belt mounts are a common place on these trucks but easy to get at and repair

Hi mate,
One will turn up, can just take a bit of time and perseverance but it is out there waiting for you. As for the mileage I only mentioned it as a 'watch out for'. Mine had the display changed at around 60,000 I think and I brought it with around 60,000 showing. It showed in the service history though with a receipt for the parts. I would of been seriously annoyed if I had brought it thinking it was a 60,000 motor. Knowledge if power as they say and gives you bargaining power when a suitable truck turns up. Good luck. |

I'll have another look at a couple tomorrow if no good I'll have look at another brand, I can't have my wheels in a garage all the time, cheers for advice lads saved me buying a lemon

Are you able to do any welding or other repairs yourself? In fairness most cars as they age will rust out. A lot of the rust spots are not too difficult but I've had the luxury of having a nother car to fall back on whilst we took our time fixing ours up.
Have you considered Patrols, theyre awesome trucks but hold their value more than Terranos. |

You sound like you're clued up now mate and checking the right things out
You'll never find a totally rust free truck but if it's just light surface rust, it's nothing a wire brush and some waxoyl can't preserve for years to come after it
