The small black rubber pipe from the top of the rad left hand side goes down the fan cowel to the bottom of the white platic header tank, when the engine gets warm/hot expanded water is fed through this pipe to the header, as the engine cools water is drawn back into the rad from the header, Rick

The pipe from the radiator to the expansion tank is in place but there is a second pipe but to be honest I don't think it's the original tank was just wondering if it did actually go anywhere

Where about is the second pipe......... Is it three quarters or near the top of the side of the tank?
If yes, it's an overflow. |

Good point Pete. Take a look at my project thread there are some pictures of the radiators at the front of mine with grill removed. There's air con and auto box oil cooler as well as power steering cooler at the bottom too.
Photos of yours will help too. |

The proper Nissan Terrano Expansion tank just has a curved bit of plastic pipe built into the actual tank, just the the side of the filler....
You can just about see it in this picture, behind the battery. It sounds like, as you say, yours is not the orriganal one... The expansion tank is just a place to allow the water to go somewhere when it gets hot and expands too much to all still fit within the confines of the engine and radiator, where it is then stored until it is drawn back via the pipe at the bottom of the tank, into the top of the radiator, when the engine cools. There only needs to be enough water in there when cool, to allow for a small amount of water loss, and to maintain the vacuum created by the water contracting and it sucks the water back into the radiator. There should never be sufficient water in the expansion tank for it to come out of the overflow, unless the tank is actually overfull or there is a major issue with the engine, and that is when it will be pushed out the overflow. Because of this, it is just wasted, and dribbles out onto the floor under the car. Your pipe is just to makes it pass further down the engine bay than the Nissan one that just dribbles all over the windscreen washer bottle and the back of the battery. Hope that helps. |
