Question Breakdown Insurance for France for older vehicles ?

Our Jeep is now 12 years old and looking at Breakdown Cover for when we go to France usually 3 times a year for 1 or 2 days we do not tow a trailer. For the minimum 2 day cover I paid £38.33 last time with NFU this works out at £153.32 !

Many standard insurance schemes do not cover for older vehicles and many do not provide cover after 12 years. If I was with the wife I would risk it for the 20 miles she does in France but not happy sending her without cover.

Anyone here have any recommendations ?

Have you tried the Nationwide current account. It's £10 a month but you get breakdown cover and a whole host of insurances.

I looked into this with my Bank for an upgraded account and it took a while to read the small print but it was only valid for vehicle less than 10 years old.

The Nationwide Breakdown Policy for Europe does not cover for Transportation of Excise goods such as Alcohol so we would have to hire a vehicle to load our booze onto to get it back home.
I cant find the age limit but expect there will be one.

Also lots of conditions where you would have to pay up front and then claim back if you brake down on certain roads ! They can take 14 days to repatriate your vehicle but will not cover the cost if the to do so exceeds the value of your vehicle.

It's a minefield alright not read all of the Nationwide T&C's but a common exclusion is if your vehicle is deemed to have not been maintained in accordance with the Manufacturers Recommendations.

Default RAC cover limited to vehicles under 11 year old !

Saw this in the 52 page terms and conditions on Page 19 well hidden !

You can get vehicle cover as opposed to personal cover for older vehicles but could not find an online cost.

Exclamation AA cover £30.28 for 2 days

Not read all the T&C's 30 pages with probably over 100 paragraphs !

But it's age is not an issue.

I'm with Octagon who have foreign breakdown on the policy, I haven't read all the small bits, but they know that my vehicle is an 05. If they don't cover it, they owe me some money.

this is from the rac .....not sure about European terms

for UK Breakdown Cover, there is no age limit on the vehicles we cover. Please bear in mind though - if your car is over 10 years old and you would like a vehicle-based breakdown cover, you must choose a higher level of vehicle cover than basic Roadside, such as:
• Roadside and Recovery (Onward Travel optional)
• Roadside and At Home
• Roadside, Recovery and At Home
• Roadside, Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel.

There is no car age limit if you are choosing personal-based breakdown cover.

For European cover over 11 years old the T&C's seem to infer that you have to move from Personal Cover to Vehicle Cover.

The quote from the AA website is Lite Cover so that might be another name for No Cover in reality !!

You would not be the first person to find that they will take your money and refuse a claim later on. Is your cover tied in with the vehicle Insurance as I am looking for alternative stand alone cover.

One common theme is that in France as the Motorways are privately owned you have to have the vehicle recovered through the SOS phone system and pay the Private Company that do all the Motorway Breakdowns and the claim back what you paid from from your insurance company..

Default euro breakdown

I'm with Marcus Study insurance via Adrian Flux I pay £50 per year for a 1996 Mistral. I do go to Europe quite a lot but the way things were going one trip was costing more than that.
