Copied from the GLASS forum
Quote:
The BOAT part of sarn helen is open from the 1st june to the end of august (tro'd from the 1st september to the 31st may).

The rest of sarn helen is officially RB, so drive it at your discression. I know a lot of people still use it, probably unaware of NERC and its affect.
RB = Restricted Byway

Elsewhere on the GLASS forum there is comments that the police have been issuing section 59 notices on there. Get a 2nd one and they crush your truck.

From what I can tell none of it is currently open.

Maps don't show if it is open or closed - you need to consult the local rights of way department. All they show is thet it is a Byway Open to All Traffic or a resticted byway or a bridleway etc, the maps do do take into account wether there is a TRO on it at the time. Some of the recently closed lanes in the Yorkshire Dales are BOATS, they will continue to be shown as BOATS on maps as that is what they are however there are TROs in place banning motor propeled vehicles from them much like Sarn Helen which has a seasonal TRO.

If you are serious about Green Laning I suggest you join GLASS or CRAG etc or at least a local 4x4 club that will know the local situation - it can quite literally change daily.

ok well im quite keen not to get a section 59 ,so joining a local club would be a good idea , trouble is i do think there is a need for responsible off roading most of the time, as with most things. but will they let you let your hair down occasionally...
local to me is powys 4x4 reponse which seems a good route . but will that limit the fun you can have. i know your in a similar club . and id like to learn as much as possible

Thats what pay and play sites are for.

Powys 4x4 response are now 4x4 Response Wales and whilst local to you Green Laning etc is purely a secondary thing to what they do. I'm not trying to put you off joining them btw just that green laning is merely an add on to 4x4 Response. There will probably be a local club too - or as I say there's GLASS itself.
