M O T Time again
yep it is that time again, had it on the hoist today all pretty good under, but a few issues, fuel leaking from top of fuel tank, front and rear ARB Drop links, front ARB rubbers and an engine oil leak nearside, 4 tyres near but not on the limit, some underseal on previously welded bits need making good, so not too bad, Rick

Did not have a lot of time on it today as Sarah had a relapse after being discharged from hospital on Friday, got her back here again now in the mobile, anyway found a little bit of welding needed on the chassis, very close to where I put a plate last time, but most of my time was spent on getting my Mig working after the flood some time ago, nothing to onerous just that as I picked up the torch head water came out, so the switch was stuffed, but so were the bolts holding the torch together so took an age to get it apart in a way that it would go back together again, plastic with rusted nuts that could not stop turning in the recess, all I have to do now is sort the fuel leak, the drop links and the oil leak which on cursory examination looks like the oil filter, so oil and filter change is in order, but got tomorrow now as will have to stay home to be on hand for Sarah, Rick

Just out of interest, was the list a fail sheet or is it your own pre mot inspection? Its just that the inspectors always find something else. Sometimes seems as they have fads of failing cars.

I agree, you can normally spot most, the odd one like orange paint on bulbs flaking off is one you can miss, we had an advisory on the Picasso once, I missed that one
Rust and corrosion, and rust on brakepipes are the grey areas, the simplest fails are the odd bulb out, especially the No. plate bulb, and self fit have a go DIYers that can't fit a replacement headlight bulb properly, we have all seen them, lighting up the sky, because they didn't align them properly.

Did not have a lot of time today on the car, but did sort the fuel leak, thought it was going to be the access panel on the tank but no it was the return pipe, clip was tight as it would go, so new clip of the worm drive style sorted it, drop links will be in tomorrow am so will pick them up and fit as and when I can find time, it was the left pipe in the pic, you can just see the glint of derv on the plastic, Rick

I had to weld up our log burner today, we had noticed it was getting a bit smoky when last used, earlier this year. I had a look under the tins yesterday and noticed where the flue comes out, that it had rusted through. So dismantled it, sack barrowed up to the garage and now welded up, quick coat of paint, then back in tomorrow.

It was the 6" spigot that comes from the fire box, where the chimney connects onto, it had rusted through and was only attached in a couple of places. I removed it, ground it down and cleaned all the rust off, then welded it with my mig, I used the mig at max setting. I'm not sure what metal it is Rick, it may be cast. I did read that with cast, you need plenty of power, so I used my 130 mig on full power. The results look good, with a total sealed and welded join now.

if it is cast iron then it will most likely crack again, with cast you need cast rods and conditioning heating/cooling or it can be brazed, Rick

I welded a cast iron lever/handle about 4 years ago and that is still solid, like I say, it looks very solid and has good penetration. I will see how it goes
