I like them takes me back to my old Mini days all the A series engined Minis had them as standard.

Mind you with shared oil with gearbox you needed them. A strong magnet is better as moving hot oil needs some Gauss force to grab passing iron particles so I think the stronger the magnet the better - might even help retain the Gauss Force with the high temperatures.

I'm going to invest in one I think, I was with Rick before I did a bit of research into them, there's a good video on YouTube that shows a cross section inside with clear oil and they spin the oil up and then pour in some iron filings, they make a massive difference

I would not bother, you will be wasting your money, a magnet picks up particles that sink to the bottom of the sump end of story, but only iron, what do you think happens to the white metal, brass and aluminium, etc basically the only protection a sump filter does is protect the oil pump, after that the main oil filter comes into play, think about it????? Rick

You are right that it only picks up Ferrous based metals my Hyundai Automatic Gearbox has a factory fitted magnetic plug not sure they would bother with the cost if there was no advantage? I assume they do it to ensure the gearbox lasts as long as the engine I have read that most major manufacturers aim for an engine life of 150k miles if serviced according to schedules.

Surely protecting the oil pump is well worthwhile in itself is it not especially for those of us who run older cars?
Manufacturers do not want engines that last as they want to sell you a new car.
Although I have never fitted one I am a big fan of pre-oilers especially for diesel engines. Its a shame modern vehicle do not have the under bonnett space to fit them easily.

I am not being negative about magnetic drain bungs, they are a well worthwhile fitment, no I am being negative about overpriced fancy ones that will do no more than a simple magnet placed on the bung, Rick

Sorry I must have misread your earlier comments I thought you were being sceptical.

I agree it's a bit pricey however I have ordered one for my Hyundai with the Club Divi.

In my younger days I would have drilled a hole in my existing sump plug then fettled a magnet to fit.

Have just bought a filter & mag. plug off ebay (from a reputable company LOL).
However plug is much too small & should be 22 A/Hex with M16? thread (measures 16.5 dia.). Can anyone confirm actual thread size for an '04 3L?

By the way, if you have a metal canister oil filter try attaching a magnet to the end, tape it on to retain it, then (hopefully?) the ferrite particles stay in the filter & won't migrate to the sump & possibly settle there, or anywhere else! I was given this tip many years ago & religiously use it when I can, what is there to loose?

To those who don't think mag plugs do anything, I can only say that my 27yo VIva always had one, but the steel sump obviously got magnetised as it was 5mm deep in metal sludge after 140K & 25 years!

I have just purchased a magnetic one for my MR2, it only cost £4.30 posted, those seem to be very expensive.
