Default What are CV joint symptoms?

So whilst we were offroading yesterday, whilst in 4WD only and more pronounced whilst turning there was a constant horrid clonking from the drivers side wheel area, I suspect it is CV joint as the clip came off the rubber boot a while ago, I used a cable tie but it seems to have worsened.

Can anyone shed light as to the types of symptoms and noises ect, I want to try and make sure I am ordering the right bits

Thankyou all again as usual

EDIT - just to mention all four wheels were spinning

Sounds like classic CV joint demise , esp with poorly boot.

Mine wasnt even split, but I put more grease in and did it up with a cable tie but alas, she is making a horrid noise.

What happens if auto hubs start to go? (clueless)

It'll def be cv joint but mine been clucking for a week or two and finally let go now dodgy to drive as drive shaft is just flapping around inside joint which could lock up at any time so ya need to get it sorted ASAP really. From what I've been reading it's full hub carrier off and top ball joint will shear it's bolts as soon as you get spanner one them so get new top ball joint ready too. I've read a few chaps have managed to do it with out touching ball joints so I'm gonna try that option tomorrow will keep ya posted

your truck should have fixed hubs, much more reliable than auto hubs as no maintenance required and always fixed to the shafts. full lock knocking could be steering lock bits need greasing.

nope, defo not this, when my front wheel got stranded in a hole yesterday I tried reversing, CLONK CLONK CLONK as the wheels span (straight steering too)

it sounds like a dreadful metalic noise (revolutionary)

It will bud as suspension will be fully extended it'll be worse as more angle on the cv joint get under it and see if you have any play in drive shaft

Have you still got your bump stops in place upfront ? If so then the CV shouldn't be over stressed .

Would it be a CV if its only in 4wd.
I have always found a knackers CV clicks loudly on full lock.
I'm not talking steering stops.
But I don't know about 4x4s its always been on normal cars

If it was a CV joint away i'm sure you hear this noise in 2WD as well due to you having fixed hubs & the drive shafts are turning no matter what drive you select the only difference is your putting drive to the front wheels. Normally when a CV is on it's way out it'll click or knock on full lock
