Touch wood
So cleaned out air filter housing and put in new filter..
So far so good. We went out for about 4 hours lane hunting. Time will tell if problem us still hidden of not |

more or less, yes.
The concept is that for a certain range of parameters, engine revs, road speed, temperature etc.... there will be an upper and lower acceptable limit value for the MAF, if the measured value falls out of this range then safe map is used. safe map or limp mode will always reset by ign. off/on. But if the error persists will kick in again.

It just slowly died TBH & getting up hills got harder & harder as I had to keep dropping down gears fitted a new one in the dealers carpark pulled away like I normally did & left 2 huge black tyre marks & fish tailed like mad up the road

Thats sounds correct.
The MAF is still providing some kind of output although way off the mark. If the output from the MAF does not change at all then MIL will be on, same as when it's unplugged!
