Default Anyone on here into Daggers/knives?

My father-in-law is a bit of a kleptomaniac when it comes to army style knives and things. When he was able bodied, he was a member of the local gun club, and all sorts, but since his stroke 12 years ago, he can no longer partake in such things.

The thing is, he is now getting on a bit, and has many things wrong with himself including being wheel chair bound, so has recently starting to tidy a few things up and find new homes for bits and bobs before he departs from this world. I also think that some of the bits are hard reminders of how things were when all was well.

His son, is a full on church going, god fearing Christian, who does not approve of guns and knives, and stuff like that, so the Father-in-law has always kept them a secret from him, but now, with everything that is going on in his life, he has taken me in as his confidant, and is slowly getting me to remove the incriminating bits, so should anything happen, his son will never need to know about them. His daughter (my Wife) is a lot younger than her brother, so knew about most of the bits thank goodness.

Some stuff is just things like quality penknives, compasses, army spade, binoculars, that sort of stuff, that we have hung onto as I will use it. He recently decided that I needed one of his SAS style knives, and gave me a Dagger like thing, in scabbard that is designed to be strapped to your leg, and would result in a very quick trip to the local nick, if you just set foot outside the front door with it, and I was going to put it up for sale on Ebay, to get rid of it, but here is the problem, I have no idea what it is.

It's has Solingen and W Germany on the hilt the blade, but no other markings. I have had a pretty good look round on line, and the only ones I can find like it are Bayonets, rather than daggers, and have a slightly different hilt, for fixing onto the gun barrel. it's 300mm long, with 170mm being the blade. The blade is sharpened all along one side, and just half way along the other, and is a dark brown in colour, which is how it is meant to be.

Can anyone ID it for me?

Cheers

You see, that's what I thought, but on the USM7, the hilt has a loop and the end of the handle has a hinge out loop to slide over the barrel of a gun, my one has neither of these bits.

Also the Hilt on mine, is a different shape to the USM4, which is also close.

I'm sure the loop was optional

Is it the real McCoy or a replica? I know the replicas were made without the loop but it looks legit to me in the picture which is whats confusing me.

I know they did a shorter version without the loop which was a few inches shorter without the scabbard and was kept in soldiers boots

I think I've cracked it, the Paratroopers used to be equipped with the M3 Fighting Knife;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_fighting_knife

It looks as if there was a hybrid that was produced due to the success of the M3 with the paratroopers, so one was produced that used an M3 blade and an M7 handle, the M£ had a leather wrapped handle, does yours look original and in tact? If it is then it was probably done in the factory, if it looks a bit rough and ready it was probably converted in the field

Thats the thing I was trying to check... He is the sort of guy, who does not believe in buying "pretend", so when he got it, he will have bought it as "Genuine", but as I say, I am struggling to find the exact same one anywhere. I have had a search on Ebay running for about 3 months now, and never seen one come up, which is why I was wondering if I should be searching on something different.

I have also read that on some, the blade is Classed as Surgical, so deliberately has no markings etched into it.

The problem is, his mind is failing, so we struggle to find out information on when and where these things came from. We found 2 huge telescopes in a wardrobe, he bought 1, then forgot, and so having "always wanted a telescope" bought himself another one. We are not sure if he got them before or after he became stuck in his wheelchair, but either way he then found that neither was suitable for him as they are too heavy for him to move, and he can't get into the right place to see through them.

It has a Nylon handle, with no leather at all. I don't think this has ever seen any action, as the blade it has no marks at all, and has never been sharpened. The marks you see on the blade in the picture are just oil marks, where it was oiled before being inserted into the scabbard.
