Default Four wheel drive.

Ok so here is my problem.Today while doing some gentle off roading.The truck would not engage 4x4 low.(High is fine)On my second attempt to get into low range,there was a very slight crunch(as if trying to engage).
So once home i got under the truck,but unable to see anything obvious.

I did take the truck to a local exhaust place This Friday gone(Always use them).And while i was hovering around,the guy said that he did have to disconnect the diff,to gain access.

Obviously,if this has any bearing on the matter.Then first thing in the morning i will be back there.
Any ideas guys.

I assume you mean you had the front pipe replaced and they had to remove the front prop shaft, usual issue, it's what most places do...
I can't imagine how it would affect 4 low, I asssume 4 high works ok.

Have you had a body lift since the last time you used 4 low?
When was the last time you used 4 low? if a long time, then the mechanism can get crudded up.

Remember you have to push down the 4 wheel drive knob, before you move it backwards, to engage 4 low...

Hi rustic.It was the front pipe indeed that was replaced.(Meant to say prop from diff)
4 wheel high works fine.The last time i used both high and low was in august this year.When i spent the day at K.O.RC. Play and Pay.
I am aware of the procedure to engage the low range.(Have had to use it on more than occasion)But thanks anyway mate.
I am gonna change all the oils at the weekend anyway.
I doubt if that will cure it but Hey Ho..

I thought you knew about the engagement, but I do tend to over egg the pudding as it were, just in case other newbies were unaware.

I can't think of anything else, Solarman would have more experience than most on the 4 low issues. I only ever use mine on steep icy slopes about twice a year, and it always works ok, I should exercise it more often really, must find some wet grass or loose gravel

I would dry getting some oil around the 4WD gear stick as it go's into the box as i've found they can get very stiff from lack of use so have taken to moving the 4WD stick into 4H & 4L once a week whilst parked up on the drive as I found mine didn't want to come out of 4L but seems fine now

There is a thread on here where there is a metal guide or adjustable stop, or something like that, that drops, and stops the leaver going forward far enough. I think it was on the top, under the gaiter. Worth having a search.

When I had my Suzuki, it actually said you should put it into 4 wheel drive at least once a month... If I was not off roading any month, I just used to do it in a car park, when I returned to the car. I would lock the front manual hubs as I got into the car, get the car into a straight line to the exit, pop it into 4 low, and drive across the car park, then slip it back into 2 High, and drive home, unlocking the hubs once I was in the drive... only takes a few mins, and makes sure everything stays good and lubricated.

A bit easier on the auto hubs, I don't need to bother locking them, and I just reverse a few feet to disengage the locks, before I leave the car park.

Well worth doing, as it not only spreads the oil around the transmission, but I was also told it helps stop the oil seals sticking from being left in one place for too long.

Hi Lazy-Ferret,I normally use Hi and low every other week.(Old N.C.B land).And always reverse after using Hi-Lo.Just good practice.

Had the same trouble with mine when I first bought it at 9Y old. Seriously don't think it had ever been used.
It crunched something terrible but freed-off with regular use. I make a point of using it at least once a month, as has been suggested already, & it's been OK since. At the time some-one on here suggested that there was some external linkage that tended to seize-up but I can't remember if that was the case (old age has caught up with me....not LOL!).

Still trying to find it, but this thread has pictures of the plate that I think was causing the issues, if I remember correctly... Worth a look anyway.

Hi guys,just a update really.
I have had another look under the truck,after printing off the transfer gear control.Still not able to find a solution.(Also need a new inspection lamp,getting dusk now).
Also i have been back to my little off road place,to try everything again,no joy.
But after disengaging 4Hi and reversing with the window down i heard a clicking sound(Suspect front hubs,could be wrong)
Just to add when trying to engage 4 Low the transfer lever will push down

The clicking will be the auto hub/s sticking & not unlocking, I had this on a laning trip & got told to take off the hubs & pour in just a drop of oil. I did it & they never played up again
