Will someone just buy me a Terrano....

because I can't make my mind up! I'm worse than my wife with shoes

I want a 3.0, manual, SVE , this much is certain.

I'd quite like green or maroon (or whatever colour that is), something that looks good polished (stop throwing stones at me for blaspheming at the back!)

All of a sudden, a few are popping up on autotrader.

choices are:

1. Silver, 66k, 03 plate, dvd in headrests, 12 month MOT, but A/C pipe holed at condensor £3000 , private sale west midlands (4 hr train ride)

2. Silver (again) 64k, 04 plate, 9 months MOT, £3.5k, dealer, chigwell, london (1 hr car drive)

3. Maroon 90k, 54 plate, 4 month MOT £4k, dealer, suffolk (2 hr car)

4. Green 85k, 03 plate, 12 month MOT £4k, dealer, peterborough

I'd rather give my money to a private seller, but the AC could easily be £500 to fix

number 2 could be mine today , 9 month MOT tho, and I can't see the dealer on google maps street view

number 3 doesn't have enough MOT, but is maroon. And I work at a garage. (there are MOT's, and MOT's with a wink)

number 4 is the bestest colour, but right on my limit of spend, and I don't want to p/x my V70, as its too good for that.

My head hurts, I've been up since 6.30 looking and dithering. You wouldn't believe I'm nearly 50.....

No 1. Because it's got a decent mot, it's could be £2750 for cash offer if you haggle and the mileage seems ok. Aircon is rarely used anyway and you can fix it at your leisure.

The problem is when I pick a new motor I go choose my vehicle spec and budget then everything rests on 3 things; condition, condition and condition.

Any one of those could be broken, rotten or in some way not as described.

If I am considering a vehicle that requires a lot of travel to get to, then I ask the seller to email me pictures of the inside and underside and any particular areas I want. If they don't/can't be arsed then simple, I cross em off my list.

Another thing to bear in mind with lower mileage terranos is that the speedo cluster is prone to failure so could have been changed ask for evidence of mileage check mots and service stamps

If this is the silver one. It looks pretty good and the seller has good feedback.

New tyres but sounds like needs a couple of bits doing so I'm betting that it could be easy to haggle. Looks like from the feedback he had a caravan so it's been used for towing, whether that bothers you or not...

yup - the good thing about the new MOT certificate is the mileages of the previous MOTs are on there.

with number one, it could be the short hp pipe, or a very long twisty one that goes round the back of the block..... pics requested

You could see about 3 or 4 in a good day, then with luck you would have found the right one, a quick phone later call buys it.

I assume you have got some good pics, the inportant thing on these trucks is rust in the sills, chassis, front outer wings and inner wings.

Easy to spot just a quick look, then you can look at mechanicals, service history, tell tell signs of accident damage like paint overspray on trim panels.

Take a blanket and slide under neath, check for oil leaks etc, rock the car side to side, any clunks will be either the ARB links or upper or lowerball joints, cheap to replace BUT a good negotiating starting point.

If a dealer, you could insist on a Free MOT and service prior to collection.

Ah, the 2.7 vs 3.0 scenario I'm choosing a 3.0 for the better economy, and power. Even though I won't be towing anything heavy, I think the 2.7 just wouldn't have the oomph I'm used to with the V70, and I absolutely have to keep the next car at least 3 years, as my wife is fed up of me changing cars every year

Isn't the 3.0 same as the Patrol, and a proven unit?

You will be lucky to find a 9 year old terrano without rust issues ive never seen one

I've seen some very rotten late terranos mate, when Renault took over quality went out the window

The 3.0 is the same as the patrol and nothing but trouble. After 04 the overheating/overfuelling issues were supposedly sorted but there are still instances all over the net

Power/torque of the 2.7 is ample mate be under no miss conceptions especially once egr is removed and a freeflowing air filter is fitted

And running 95% veg at £1 a litre means no other proper 4x4 will come close to a Terrano 2.7 on miles per £

mine 12 year old. no rust or at least ive yet to find it
im with stinka 2.7 all the way 3ltr parts are a lot more expencive

I think it was 2000 or 2001

Mine is a Renault variant, but luckily it's rot free as its had a very easy life prior to me

Things like poor under seal, thinner props shafts with no grease nipples, weaker/cheaper c200 rear axle, many money saving changes, which means post 2000 terranos are no where near as robust as earlier ones.
