laptop is stuffed

it's stuffed, it won't boot properly, it's allready had repairs done and about a month later this happend,it beeps every 5 mins and does nothing but show this message, even the internal fan stopped working any ideas

the time before when it broke it showed a blue screen and the fan revved right up, it running windows xp

If an internal fan has stopped, it implies it could be the main power supply.

Most of the small internal fans run off 12 volts, I also think that the hard drive might also require the 12 volt supply.

Just a thought.

Sounds like it is overheating.The processor will beep a numbered sequence to tell you what the problem is,overheating is one of them. You could start off by reloading Windows but if the fan does not work during that process the laptop will shut down and only make things worse.The fan is usually controlled by the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) which as the title suggests is a basic computer function and not program related.
The fan should come on immediately you start up and run quite strongly to start off.If not the fan could be faulty or the BIOS is throwing a wobble.Either way a bit complicated to sort out.I think there are guys more knowledgeable than me on the site who could perhaps help you there.
Worthwhile checking that the fan vents are all clean and fluff free and that the laptop is on a hard ventilated surface.(Not the duvet)

If it has been left to cool, then it should start up from the hard drive and run before over heating, so may not be over heating.

Regarding my earlier post, re the fan, my brain engaged too early, as it is desk top that require 12 volts for their fan, sorry for the red herring.

My daughters acer net book did the same, it showed no hard drive, and a friend fiddled around with the settings and it was fine after. Don't know what he did though.

Have you tried booting it from another media eg. cd.usb thumb drive?? David.

The reason is, it will bypass the hard drive if its faulty or the O.S. xp and hopefully show the rest of the hardware to be OK if not it may be a stip down. David.

the hard drive came lose i pushed it home and it has been fine ever since

You've obviously got power and the main board isn't seeing the HDD properly because it's either not plugged in right or it's laid itself down to rest. New HDD's are available, sadly not quite as ten a penny as they used to be, but definitely there.

Lack of cooling fan isn't good though, could be it's being a good boy and waiting until things warm up to come on, or it too could be dead, if so that''ll allow the CPU to overheat and that can have knock on impact to other bits like the HDD as they don't like being too hot either.

Burn an Ubuntu CD and boot from that to test out the hardware, it'll make sure everything else is behaving even if the HDD has died. Being an XP laptop would suggest it's fairly old and HDD's don't last forever so it wouldn't surprise me that it's the cause.

What make/model is it? I might have spare bits a loafing about, happy to have a look if your not confident in dealing with stuff that doesn't fix using a big hammer

You should still have me address if you want to punt it over.

Ryan, to tell if the fan is actually working, switch it on. 99% of laptop fans will spin at startup as a check. I agree with others, HD is either loose, or screwed.

It's completely silent, I left it running for about 30 mins to see it would sort it's self out but nothing. We've had enough problems with it and I think dad wants to buy himself a brand new one
