Considering making a switch to a T2 (or maybe 2)

Hi Folks,
I won't bore you with my life story, but I've got two frontera's (2.2Dti and 2.5Tds), and whilst they are excellent I am looking for a change.

I do a lot of greenlaning but also use the vehicles as day to day transport.

I'm looking at T2 2.7's LWB's as replacements. Can anyone tell me what to look out for on these ? I know Fronty's inside out and back to front, but I'm clueless with Terrano's. My Mum had one a good few years ago (SWB 2.7 t2) which I drove on several occasions and it seemed fine, although very twitchy around roundabouts, especially in the wet

Also, I'd like to fit 265/75/16's , I'm assuming a 2 inch will be in order ? Is it just a case of spring spacers and torsion bar wind up to suit ?

Any other nuggets of info will be gratefully received.

twitchy back ends normal wrong oil in the diff. so very simple to put right

SWB if you want a more capable machine, but LWB still ok aslong as you take into consideration of the bigger back end.

I am happy with mine, love the diesel lump.

Not being funny guys, but 75 views and other than changing the diff oil, no response ?

"What to look for" topics have been covered ad-infinitum over and over and over and over on this site, use the search function and have a read.

Buy the best condition with evidence of good maintanance truck, not necessarily the newest one that you can find, having carefully examined it for the usual problem areas, and a substantial test drive.

Drive several to get an idea for how a good one should go.

Probably avoid the 3.0.

Get a tunit box or a quality remap on the 2.7.

Buy a consult interface and download ecutalk.

Buy 2 cans of waxoyl and liberally coat everything regularly!

Have an experienced local mechanic on hand or be prepared to fettle it alittle and often to keep it upto spec. Ford dealer will often be cheaper for parts than Nissan.

I echo what Timbo says - except 'avoid the 3.0'. I've had both 2.7 and 3ltr and have to say the 3ltr wins hands down for me. Oodles of grunt and 30 mpg, what more? Normal things to look for on older models are rust at the seat belt mountings under the rear wheel arches, around the wheel arch edges on the front wings behind the plastic moulding, at the bottom of the front wings adjacent to the door. All normal stuff. The gearboxes are also prone to bearing wear (I've had that experience on both the 2.7 and 3ltr.) evidenced by rumble when driving and on over-run and difficulty in engaging gears. Apart from that these trucks are pretty bullet proof and great for towing.

As Timbo says there's much more info on the subject of pre-purchase checks in many older threads.

I'm with CaptLimey. Nowt wrong with the 3.0 in terranos. They dont have the troubles of the earlier zd30 in the patrol. More power,torque and mpg (if driven sensibly

) and I think more reliable for an everyday motor IMO.

Have a good poke round the inside of the chassis rails too. My neighbour traded his in last year, V99, 80,000 miles, spotless body and interior but you could poke a finger through the chassis

Not a common issue but seen a few farmers T2's like that.
