Friend of mine has just bought a 24k mile 2008 SWB Land Rover pickup......brought it round the other day to check out some trees we're chopping down at the weekend.

It was so small I couldn't even get into it properly to sit down......

Still, at least its got the Transit 2.4 diesel so less likely to conk out I suppose LOL.

But I am still toying with the idea of an SIIa SWB with a tilt so I can whip the lot off during what passes for summer here

Landrover 130 wheelbase are not as cramped inside

They may be longer but you'll still need the window open to get your arm on the steering wheel to go round corners

I've never driven one but we hired one once and thay are quite small inside. The 5 door crew cab or station wagons are to small in the back. You're legs hit the Back of the front seats. And i'm not fat

the defenders should have moved to the discovery body
several years ago, even when the D2 became D3.

the current design which traces back to the series landies
is frankly a joke in terms of interior.

The wheel bases are all to small for their intended use.

The 100" clasic rangey/disco frame could have been the
swb, the lwb should have been atleast 120" if not 130
then look at cab on 130, the rear passenger doors in
crewcab follow parts bin of the 110 when could have
been enlarged.

second that went on an offroading day in a 110 - went everywhere, but far to small inside

....... thought I was getting a buzz driving it. Turned out to be the vibration level. Pointless having a radio. Need to hang your arm out of the window to create a bit of space. Bloody draughty with an inefficient heater. But I kinda liked it

Eaxctly why I'd want one with a tilt - door tops off and the lot gone in summer

used to have a 1963 series 2a swb if i remember right four bolts removed cab and roof fold windscreen down door tops off and away you go
wish i had never sold it

ref width, upper body width is still close to that of series one,
the s2 gained some lower body width which continued in s3 and
defender then of course arches widened for rr axles.

so clue there was if uses rrc running gear needs matching body
hence disco 1/2.

then consider crash protection, was under impression the next
rebuild was so could have full airbags etc...

when you look at lr modding scene and see even discos are
being bobtailed and tray backed theres really no excuse to keep
a 60+ year old design going, even in the name of heritage.

Or you could do what my mate did, fit a smaller steering wheel. Works a treat and he's not small.

I learnt to drive in a 1966 series IIa, swb 2.1/4 petrol Landrover, never had a problem then as I was less than 11 stone. ( Might be a problem now though....).
Didn't have power steering then, didn't need it...

With reference to free wheel hubs as an after fit to landrovers eg series IIa, the front hubs rely on oil splash to lubricate the upper "ball joints"
As I recall they are only made from tuffnol, which is cotten reinforced plastic, which when starved of oil wear rapidly.

So run the hubs often, to lubricate them, or you will be spending more that you are saving in fuel.

These were prone to the rear cross member rotting out, bit rough if you are towing anything and the rear section bends and buckles when you brake hard with a boat on a trailer on the back.....
