Might not be much help, but!
We use a dvd recorder with an 80g (I think) hard drive, this records 4 cameras for a week and then restarts and does it all over again. If you were to get yourself a used van vault or old safe from ebay and mount the recorder in this bolted down in an outhouse or shed then unless they get it out the evidence will remain - food for thought if nothing else |

we have cameras from 'Northern tool' black and whit with night vision LED's fr about £15 each and a cheap sequencer (about £30) and the DVD under £100, you would need to plug it into a telly for playback but other than that just leave it locked in a safe place and check it's still running from time to time. As long as the DVD is secure it wouldn't matter what they did to the cameras and TV you would still have the evidence. Ours has helped in 3 prosecutions!
Having said that you could do the same with a PC, and you would need a smaller safe, just get the smallest PC you can and a decent sized safe, though you may need to add some ventilation! |

hmm...wireless IP camera off ebay, £50, but you do need network conenction so that it can email alerts to you (with images)
thats what I do, not perfect, but its a lot less money than a DVR/Camera setup unles syou can find a decent deal for £100?? this is what I use http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FOSCAM-WPA-Wir...item3f01b6e66a |

steer clear of wireless, total rubbish, have a look in Maplins for complete kits, but for something decent expect to pay £300 plus you can get cheaper but when the chips are down and you need the recording, it is not a lot of use if you cannot see the person/object clearly, I use a 250 gb hard drive £60 stores event recording for about a month, with 4 cameras, event recording is image trigger recording, that is if something moves on a particular camera in a defined area then it records for a time set by you, no further movement and it stops, the hard drive is just the storage medium, on top you need the recorder, cameras, and cable, play back/monitor on TV/computer monitor, Rick

I guess you'll need the stuff the others have mentioned and maybe an external hard drive. It should work though

I would not want to rely on a lap top to record over any period of time, especially if it is hidden away, I have a dedicated recorder, and have installed several others of different makes, and all have suffered hard drive write errors or other temporary failures, but as they are on show all the time they can seen to be in need of attention, hidden away a hard failure will be unnoticeable, and will be the time when you need the recording that will not be there, Rick

if you hid the recorder and had a cable supplying the picture to your TV on an Aux or Scart, you could check it's status pretty easily
