Briggies Motor Sally
Sourced a gearbox today coming from Hull, should be here Wed, if it arrives early enough, then Sally could be running Wed evening, if not then finish off on Thursday, any one have any good knowledge re oil cooling, it is just that this motor has now done two boxes, first one I guess because it did not have an oil cooler, this box has been running with an oil cooler very large but mounted horizontally behind the bottom part of the bull bar, so it does not get a proper air flow (the air flow is vertical through the cooler) but Pete does not tow although he is in a hilly area, could this have contributed to the revers clutch failing, I think this clutch also comes into play in low but was not able to confirm this, I am just going by the name on the drawing, as I understand it the revers clutch only works in reverse, but the reverse/low brake works for both, Rick

I would doubt the lack of proper airflow has toasted the box personnally, unless he drives the truck very hard up those hills.
The oil will smell burnt and acidic if excess heat killed it. |

I pulled the sump off with the intension of removing the valve block to check it over, as indicated in the fault finding section, but when I saw the colour of the oil that had only been in for a few days and smelt the oil pan, definite burnt smell, decided that there was no point going further, I put the burnt smell down to the reverse clutch slipping such that no drive at all at anything above cold, cold it reversed fine for a few minutes, Rick

Hmmm Have you got a thermocouple you can hook onto the cooler return line and monitor the temp going back when the new box is fitted?
Maybe the thermostat in the old box was stuck shut and it never got cooled? 100deg C would be the ideal max on the return line. |

yes I can do that no prob, was not aware there was a stat, but would over hot oil kill the reverse clutch, I was theorizing that a valve was passing in drive and putting low pressure to the revers clutch, while going forward, Rick

having now removed a box from a T2 I will definitely state it is easier to remove the engine to do a clutch, and bear in mind that the auto box is easier to remove than the manual, very short spigot, did not have any problems with the torsion bars and they are easy to set up, if I did have to remove another box I would remove the transfer box first as it comes off easy and takes the lopsided bit away making the box a lot easier to handle, I will strip the box tomorrow while waiting for the replacement, want to find out what went wrong, Rick cannot place a pic as it is already on Ricks Party pics and this silly system will not let me post it again,,,

For heavy towing many manufacturers specify an upgraded radiator/oil cooler matrix with more fins per minch and vertical pipes or offer an extra electric cooling fan. |
