Terrano 2.4i SWB - Advice please:)
Hello!
Just wondered if anyone has any advice or what to watch out for? I'm going to look at a 'P' reg 2.4i SWB for my mate tommoz, Its got 112k on the clock, towbar so its obviously towed, 6months mot & tax, bodged repair to centre box. Advertised for £1,200. Any ideas on replacent box cost? (supply only) Milage any good for petrol engine? Price any good? looks to be in decent nick (had a nosey in the dark tonight He's not going to be towing so not fussed on towing performance. Any advice much appreciated Daz Last edited by Daz__; 20-02-2011 at 23:48. Reason: Edit |

I don't have a problem with one of these motors having a towbar, pretty much made to tow. I prefer the diesel version. Check for rotten sills and rear seat belt mounts in the rear wheel arch. These can be fixed but you can use it as a tool to knock price down. Of course the 4wd system too, the front hubs. Check Ebay or Milners for exhaust.

Thanks for quick reply! I forgot about Milner i'll have a look, ta. Good tip's for Rott, i'll make sure i have a dig about. Point noted on towing I was more concerned with the petrol engine after 112k on the clock and possibly a hard tow life? Many thanks Daz |

petrol 2.4 is a good engine, just give it a good thrashing to make sure it pulls hard all the way through the gears . Electronics can be a pain to sort.
BUT 1200 squid is way too expensive the last half dozen through ebay went for around 650 and they were newer |

I did try and post yesterday but was away from home and although I got on line for a while I lost it trying to post a reply to you, so hope I am not too late, but what I said was you need to hear these engines from overnight cold, if they rattle it is one of two things ends worn or timing chain, and if it rattles it is wearing away the water pump housing (only while it is rattling before the oil tensioner take over) water in the sump is not good, problem is if the engine was even turned on the starter till oil light goes out then you come along cold engine no noise, then first time you start it in the morning you may hear the rattle that was not there before, if the ends are worn then they will rattle when starting warm after say an hour of stopping but the timing chain will not as it takes many hours for the oil to drain from the oil tensioner, hope that all makes sense, timing chain is not too bad to do and about £100 for parts, and I also was going to say that £1200 was too much, unless it is nigh on perfect, Rick

I could be wrong but I thought the "bodged repair to center box" was on the exhaust, and the problem with these is not the chain itself but the long bar tensioner breaks up, early ones were plastic later metal with plastic cover, Rick

Chain
Yep check that chain.I had one that used to rattle on start up and it can do a bit of nonesense if left unattended. Not too bad on fuel but headlights were poor.Replaced the bulbs with decent ones and no prob.Other than that it was a good one.

Here's a pick (hopefully attached)! |
