Hi just bought 2 bicycles now want to know the best way of transporting them with caravan on T2.
Only bought them to loose weight not loose sleep and get it in the neck of THE BOSS KEV

Are there not bike racks you can get for the back of ya tin can like 4x4's n cars.?

I'm definately no tin can / towing or bike expert

halfords do a bike rack that fits on spare wheel.

ask simply si for details... ( works for them. )

Try a google for TowSure and see what they have.

I looked into this a few years ago but was never able to get another van so never followed it through. IMHO the type of rack that fits on the spare wheel carrier will cause problems. firstly your putting extra weight on it and also putting movement to it. The T2 spare wheel bracket tends to break it's spot welds and starts to creak and squeak, don't worry it wont fall off as it's bolted too but the extra weight and movement surely wont do it much good.

Best type that I saw have a bracket that fits on the towbar between the ball and bar. The carrier fits in to the bracket with or without a caravan being attached. All the weight is being transmitted to the chassis and you've got something solid to chain the bikes to.

I have made a couple of bike carriers and used them sucessfully over thousands of miles.The concept is a plate that bolts betwn the ball and hitch.Two offset (sufficient to clear the spare)uprights are fitted to the plate (slot and secure pin)and level with the top of the spare.One or two horizontal slightly upward angled bars are welded to each upright at or near the top.Hang and secure bicycles as required.Disadvantage is you cannot open rear door with bicycles/rack in place.On my Mk2 model the uprights were easily removable from the plate and could be fitted within a minute when required.

Pretty basic but when painted up looks good.Pipe lagging/insulation can be used to protect the bikes if you wish.
Just make sure that the bikes wheels are never near the exhaust.I discovered to my cost that it will quite happily melt the tyre if the wheel is in a fixed position.Not funny when you arrive at an event for which you have been preparing for many weeks only to find your bike is o/s.!

Ive got one which goes on the spare wheel, fits 2 bikes on easliy. Pain in the ass to try open the rear door through, and on tight turns they must get pretty near touching the caravan!

Brother in law has one fitted to the back of the caravan, but after a trip with the 'van swaying all over the road he dont use it anymore.... a lot of weight that far back dont make for a nice tow! (and I would be paranoid about them falling of and not noticing!!!)

Dont forget if you get one that goes on the towbar you have a max weight of 150kgs.... caravan would prob be getting on for 70kgs?

Putting them on the roof of the T2 might be 'interesting' too!!!

Couldnt you fit them inside the caravan?????
