Thats their operational failing. As a disciplined (hmmm) service all should be uniform. In a pre planned risk assesed op like this the chances of one "forgetting" their flameproofs are slim

On the political side. When I did politics at college a longgg time ago a fundamental was that the military were ran by government and were a force. Police were public servants and political influence was minimal to non existant.

Seems to have changed somewhat. Possibly around 1984.

I'm just old-fashioned, but bring back the days when a copper could just give you a thick ear and send you packing home...Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars, police cars with bells instead of sirens, small boys using jumpers for goalposts....ooh, sorry I got carried away there...
