It is certainly an aero engine I would hazard a guess a RR Merlin, Rick

Recognised it instantly absolutely brilliant piece of metallic art and what a noise. Although I believe the RR Griffon was a modified version of the Merlin and difficult to distinguish between them unless you’re a geek and I’m not quite that much of a geek.Watched a YouTube video other day of Guy Martin with his, he told a story that he took it up to 2800 rpm which is maximum power and it took off around the workshop.
They were fitted in several aircraft types including Spanish Built ME109 which BBMF have one they display. Also fitted in several other vehicles such as tanks but I can’t name many tanks. Does this engine run? When everything is bolted back on of course. |

He has very little info on it at the mo and I did hear him mention Griffon.
He thinks it has all be stored properly as when he takes any plugs and bolts out everything is full of oil. I'll try for some updates until start up.. |

I remember the bloke back in the 1970's - Road Car with Merlin Engine
There was a bloke back in the 1970's who built a car with a Rolls Royce Grill on the front powered by a Merlin Engine.
RR took him to court for breach of Copyright for the Rolls front radiator he had mounted at the front. He lost his case against RR. He became famous for his speeding! It used 1 gallon every second when accelerating hard! As I recall it did about 4 mpg the bloke Dod was some sort of engineer, I think the court case bankrupted him - not sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFS83GUMTCc |

Looks as though he ended up as some sort of Auto Transmission Specialist in Europe. The car is still on the road! https://www.classicdriver.com/en/art...ed-rolls-royce |

37 litres and 12 cylinders with RR on the rocker cover would suggest a Griffon engine.
Jim, the tank engine you are thinking of was the non supercharged Meteor derived from the Merlin, used in quite a few tanks from WWII onwards. |
