Patrol Y61 LWB 2.8 year 2000 (ish) thoughts?

I am toying with the idea of finding a tidy Y61 after Christmas, I fancy a 2.8 as the bad experiences TTT2 had with the 3.0 engine has put me off for life. Can anyone tell me the general pros and cons, fuel economy etc. and what to look for in a used one? Thanks

The Y61 seems to suffer badly from chassis rot

I'm not overly familiar with the 61 but that seems the weak point overall.
Pain to find one under 4.5k
Body seems much better than Y60.

I've heard the same as Makeitfit regarding the chassis and certainly I had a good look at mine when inspecting and still have a good look if i'm underneath it for any reason.

At the age you're looking at I would DEFINITELY avoid a 3.0 unless it has had an engine rebuild - it's the early ones that have the bother. Consensus is 2003 on (when they changed the engine design) should be pretty much a safe bet as long as you don't mess with the engine ie. EGR blanking/ larger exhaust etc OR if you must mod the engine then you should install things like boost and EGT gauges so you can keep an eye on whats happening.

Far as I know the 2.8 engine is thought to be pretty reliable, just watch as it's a timing belt rather than a chain or gears. Due to the weight of a Y61 (2.5t+) I believe it can be a bit numb at times but then again you are much freer to mod it.

You won't regret having a Y61, I adore mine (sad I know). Very very capable vehicles and should come with rear diff and rear arb disconnect as standard so can handle whatever you throw at it plus she's live axles front and rear. Towing limit for the 3.0 manual is 3.5t (2.5t for auto) and I think it's the same for the 2.8. Either way they are capable of towing and handling far more than they are rated for.

Only other cons I can think of are that I think you are early to mid 20s for mpg (slightly better with the 3.0) although that was never a factor in my decision to get one.

Biggest con is you can't get a 4.2 diesel Y61 without importing!!

(I'd even go with a non turbo one...)

Thanks, I will get a manual if I get one. and I am too traumatised by other peoples experiences (even with post 2003) 3.0 engines to go down that route. Will the 2.8 run on SVO?

I tried it in mine but only 9 litres mixed with what diesel wa in the tank so dont know if it would cause long term problems. It pulled ok and I added 2stroke but I forget the ratio. I did run 2 stroke most of the time

Good bus and rot like hell under the plastic trim on wheel arch so run your hand under before you buy. If itd full of mud is not getting cleaned and in need of a close inspection

jocky had a 2.8, modest lift, 33"s chipped. sure is on here still but not seen post
for some time.

think seeing the icelandic lifted beasts make me yearn for another trol, if if didnt lift it.

davemud was another owner of a y61 though a zd on a 57 plate as i recall, and did

Thanks for the info TTT2 and Larson. It seem rot is the main problem. If I can't get a good 2.8 I'm not going to bother at all, I just don't fancy a 3.0 at all. But my old T2 is overdue for replacement and I thought of getting a van for the economy and a troll as a toy and for towing big stuff.

Awesome engine and from what I read is exactly the same as the Nissan 4.2 TD

I don't fancy going outside the marque or a 4.2 really, I don't want to deviate too much from the usual fuel consumption and - with respect - the 4.2s are all a bit long in the tooth for what I have in mind for it
