Why do they use plastic?
Cheaper than a machine casting I guess.

Are there metal inserts in the fixing holes to prevent damage caused by over-tightening?

Plastic is used for rocker box covers too, some inlet manifolds, oil filter housings etc etc...

mines just cracked too, thankfully I had my old aluminium one from the Maverick. Yes, the bolt holes do have metal inserts BUT, it would appear this doesn't stop a hairline crack from appearing. I suspect its down to the grade of plastic, temperatures and of course, over tightening....!

The earlier ones were aluminium.

It seems that they decided to use plastic on some later ones.

Probably at the same time they saved 50p by not fitting the grease nipples on the front prop shaft, and replaced the auto hubs with fixed hubs.
