update. So £20 on glow plugs from eBay seems to have been money well spent. Did notice when working on the car that the wheel arch liner has come away on the off side. Does seem a daft design to just have a bit of what looks like thin rubber sheet there.

did you get it sorted with just the glow plugs

mine sounds the same, fitted new plugs but still a pain to start

At this time of year it should start after 3 or 4 turns without glow plugs if everything else is OK. So you may need other things sorting especially the cause of the black smoke which won't be unburnt fuel. David.
