small trailer tyres
hi,
aquired a good home built trailer for trips to the tip. it has 4" pcd mini wheels with 145 (/80) R10 tyres which are shot. priced up car 145s at £41 fitted each and 8 ply 145s at 49 a piece. looking at trailer parts suppliers there are the older type 500 (5.00) x10 which are narrower and bit taller AND much better weight loadings. Also seen 8" with same pcd at about half the price that still can carry more than car derived 145s. reckon 500x10s would be touch taller than 145/80s and in turn the 400x8 be a touch smaller. looking to put booster/spacer between hitch and chassis to get it more level on the t2, any thoughts on tyres and stuff. oh and even a 500x10 on a new rim is less than a 145 8 ply on my scabby mini rims.

You have Towsure on your doorstep. Could they advise you? If you find out let us all know. As I'm going to fit new hubs on mine to increase weight capacity to stay more legal. David.

yep looking at new rims with tyres at towsure, also their mail order alt discount
towing. going to a trailer supplier at green land road / broughton lane near sheffield arena, bds as appear to sell everything from a bolt to 10 grand enclosed car transporter! trailer porn indeed.... seems funny going to a smaller rim, but with hd taller tyres can carry more for less £. still trailer tyres carry, these smaller ones dont even need to brake and certainly dont steer or traction so make sense can be different or better built for their job.

Are you replacing just the wheels or hubs as well? David.

hoping to save hubs, seem well greases despite long stand out of use,
its a straight axle with leaf spings over it, so pretty good clearance even on little wheels. just want it on road safe and secure, whilst mainly for going to dump can be handy if able to do longer trips safely, perhaps carry our bikes into country side. theres no weight plate being very old, so thinking 750 kg is max for an unbraked and if work on maybe 500 kg max weight can get some decent tyres to cope then use rule of thumb for loading to match what would put in back of t2. even a 4 ply should carry 300-360 kg so x2 plus margin. need to run a 12n cable under it to a socket to connect my car bike rack light bar to, and a ladder type rack so can see trailer from inside t2.

You can always get new bearing sets if they are worn. What are you doing with the old wheels ...maybe interested. David.
