When you switch it on, do other lights flash, or can you hear the hard drive clicking?

If not, then it is more likely to be a hardware fault, most likely around the input voltage, power switch, charging circuit etc.

Do you know what happened to the original power supply?
If it went over voltage, then it may have blown a component in the power area of the PC.

You then have to consider is it worth getting it repaired or just removing the hard drive and get the data off it, as suggested earlier, or a PC shop could do this for you.

Compare this to buying a new one.

But checking out the old power supply would be a good plan.

Are you sure the replacement power supply is up to the job, both in voltage and current, otherwise you will get these symptoms.

Although, having fully charged the battery, ( or is it?) it should have started up on the battery alone.

Question:
Did the power supply blow the computer?
Or Did the computer blow the power supply?
My guess would be a failure of the power supply.

OK got most of that.
The power light comes on when the start button is pressed but no hard drive sounds or cooling fans etc.
No other lights unless I plug in the power supply unit. I bought it as a direct replacement to the old one. It states the same numbers etc ie 15v and 4 amps.
The old psu had been gashed together for years and eventually curled up and croaked the other day. However the lappy carried on till the battery also gave it's last
Ther battery took about the same time to charge as the last psu did and the battery itself was new Christmas time
So I guess it's it's some hardware failure as you say, so it's off to the lappy doccy in a bit then
Cheers

Ok, you will think I am barmy but this is legit.

A lot of issues we get similar to yours are related to built up static.

Remove all leads from the laptop

Remove battery from laptop

Hold power button down for 1 minute WITH NOTHING CONNECTED AND NO BATTERY

Put battery back in

Try

Only asking because if you have an hp with a docking station the laptop psu will only work on the laptop solo but the docking station psu will work on the laptop solo and in the docking stn. Guess who had to phone IT dept who then phone hp to be told that
